The Chaffee County Community Foundation is excited to announce the 2024 Community Summit for nonprofit professionals and community leaders on April 30 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds. This year's theme is Building Bridges - Strengthening Community Connections. This full day event includes sessions on a variety of topics critical to nonprofit success such as fundraising, nonprofit management, setting your board up for success, volunteer engagement and more. Keynote Speaker, Denise Ackert, will lead us through sessions that will challenge us to increase our community impact. The Chaffee County “We Are Chaffee” storytelling initiative has been developing a community-focused documentary for the past year and is hosting two film premieres and several free showings throughout the county this summer and fall. The dates for the premieres of “A Home in Paradise” have been set for Friday May 10th as part of the Salida Film Festival and will include a panel discussion with the people who share their stories in the film, the directors and producers, and local experts on housing and health. Join us after the premiere for an upscale social with appetizers & desserts by Kalamatapit & a cash bar. Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is excited to announce that due to high demand and a sold out event in March at the library in Salida, CCPH will be presenting a workshop on emergency preparedness and go- kit distribution open to all ages at A Church in Salida on Tuesday, May 14th from 11am-noon. The workshop will be presented by CCPH Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator, Sophia Gibb, and CCPH Director, Andrea Carlstrom. The go-kits include essential items and necessary supplies that you can easily grab during an emergency. Supplies include: flashlights, water bottles, and first aid kits. Recipients would put all supplies in a backpack or “Go-Bag” to easily grab in case of an emergency like a wildfire. There will also be information presented on evacuation checklists, insurance coverage, preparing pets for disaster, and much more. “Chaffee County Public Health is excited to be able to offer this presentation again, due to the high demand we had for the initial presentation. It is crucial that every household has a go-kit ready in case of emergency. We hope that all Chaffee County residents who are interested in what to do and what to bring during an emergency will register to attend. Free go-kits will be available for those who register for the event” says Sophia Gibb, CCPH Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator. The Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce will be holding the 2024 Golf Scramble on May 17th, 2024, at the Salida Golf Club, located at 411 Crestone Ave. Tee times are available from 11:30am-2:22pm. Join us on May 18th from 8am-1 pm for the 33rd Annual Cleanup-Greenup, co-sponsored by Colorado Parks & Wildlife (CPW) and the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA). Volunteers will work together to clean up 152 miles of the Arkansas River in preparation for Spring runoff. Trash can be left behind any AHRA recreation site three-panel sign, placed in the dumpster at the Buena Vista Community Center, or brought to our trash drop-off site at Riverside Park in Salida. All registered participants will be given lunch, which will be served at Riverside Park. Please join us for the Gear Up For Summer event, also being held at Riverside Park. Free PFDs will be given to the first 50 youth. Other community organizations will be present, helping our local community to gear up for a safe and fun summer. Join the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and the Salida Regional Library for a three-part naturalist education series to train the public on how to be effective naturalists and stewards of our public lands. Four Mile Historic Park has announced “Family Fun Free Day” – a special event that will celebrate Indigenous culture on Friday, May 24, 2024 at the 12-acre historic park in the city. The full-day event promises an exhilarating celebration of community and Native American heritage, featuring Indigenous vendors, activities, education centers, and several performances from Rocky Mountain Indigenous Dancers. Tocabe: An American Indian Eatery will be on-site, serving their delicious Indian tacos and other Native American cuisine. As the title suggests, Family Fun Free Day is a free event (and open to the public) through the generous support of several sponsors. Museum Open House The Salida Museum will be presenting our 2024 Open House on Saturday, May 25, from 10am to 4pm. Admission will be free and refreshments will be served.  Of course, all the exhibits will be available for your inspection. Steve Chapman, local Salida historian, will be giving presentations on Salida history at 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm.  Steve is a lively speaker, and his knowledge of Salida history is extensive.  Don't miss this chance to hear him.
