Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) announces the sunset of its Home Share Program, which will be phasing out by late summer. The decision comes after careful consideration and evaluation of the program’s performance since its inception.
The Home Share Program was initially launched to address both housing and aging challenges in the county by connecting homeowners over 55 with extra space in their homes to individuals seeking affordable housing options. Despite efforts to promote the initiative, the program has not garnered sufficient interest, particularly from potential home seekers.
Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is thrilled to announce the launch of the newly revamped Chaffee Resources website. This website has been in existence since 2018, when CCPH, along with healthcare leaders from the Chaffee County Health Coalition, acknowledged that there was not a central place to obtain current and accurate information regarding health and wellness resources. In a collaborative effort, the Chaffee Resources website was created to serve as the one stop hub for all resources and services related to health and wellness. The website has been and will continue to be managed by CCPH. To find out more about the Chaffee County Health Coalition, contact asmedly@chaffeecounty.org.
The Chaffee Housing Authority, in cooperation with the City of Salida, is asking short term rental owners and vacation home owners within the City of Salida and the surrounding area to transition their short-term rentals, rarely-used vacation homes, unoccupied accessory dwelling units, or other under-used houses to a long-term rental for local workforce. If you or someone you know has a housing unit that is generally empty or generally hosts out-of-town visitors, the Chaffee Housing Authority would happily match your home with members of the local workforce who are unable to find rental homes in this unprecedented rental market. More information can be found by visiting the Chaffee Housing Authority’s website at www.chaffeehousingauthority.org and select the Open Doors Program for more information and to apply to participate in the program.

Cutting fuelwood without a valid permit is punishable by a fine. The cost for a fuel wood permit is $10 per cord with a minimum purchase of three cords. As of July 12, 139 abandoned or unattended campfires were reported to the Pueblo Interagency Dispatch Center. This dangerous trend in outdoor recreation is one of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires. The 2024 Interlaken Fire in Leadville, Colo. was started from an abandoned campfire and went on to burn over 700 acres of the Interlaken Historic District. As National Fire Preparedness Levels rise, and the peak of summer still to come, the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands is urging the public to prioritize proper campfire safety precautions when recreating on national forests and grasslands.

Children represent a significant proportion of trafficking victims worldwide, with girls being disproportionately affected.
This year’s theme–”Leave No Child Behind”–recognizes that one in three victims of human trafficking globally is a child. And, according to the UN Office’s recent Global Report on Trafficking in Persons, children are twice as likely to face violence during trafficking than adults.

June 26, 2024 — The first public feedback and information gathering phase in the Chaffee County Trails System and Conversation Plan (TSCP) has closed, with hundreds of people providing more than 3,500 write-in comments to help set the plan’s priorities and provide information about the current trails system.
Public input was gathered in a survey that asked 13 questions about needs and opportunities in separate geographic areas across the county. The link was published in local media and social media outlets, and was open for three weeks.
The survey followed an in-person community meeting in May that, in a sign of the community’s high interest in the plan, attracted an overflow crowd at the County Fairgrounds. The survey was offered to provide an additional feedback opportunity with more room for open-ended comments.

Xcel Energy will be removing the 218-foot earth and rock-fill dam at Fooses Reservoir on the South Arkansas River near Garfield, Colo. The dam is located on the Salida Ranger District of the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. The project is anticipated to last from July 2024 to December 2024. Fishing will be prohibited during construction.
During the implementation of the project, access to Forest Service Road 225 past Fooses Reservoir will be limited to foot and bicycle traffic only. A pedestrian access path will be available for public use. The path will close for short periods of time to ensure public safety while construction occurs immediately adjacent to or on County Road 225. These closures will be infrequent and will occur on weekdays only.
There will be increased traffic entering and exiting County Road 225 and Highway 50 during construction, and portions of County Road 225 may periodically close for short periods of time. These closures will be communicated in advance by Xcel Energy to homeowners in the area. Traffic will be managed per Colorado Department of Transportation access requirements and per safe traffic control practices.
