“A Home in Paradise” Second Showing
“A Home in Paradise” Second Showing
The Chaffee County “We Are Chaffee” storytelling initiative has been developing a community-focused documentary for the past year and is hosting two film premieres and several free showings throughout the county this summer and fall. Watch the trailer here. The second premiere date is Wednesday, June 5th at the Salida SteamPlant and will be a free community event with only registration required. After the movie showing, We Are Chaffee will host a complimentary dinner and facilitated community discussion. “The film itself is a powerful tool to stimulate discussion within our community and We Are Chaffee intends to deepen these discussions by providing a platform for “keeping the conversation going” with post film guided questions as we continue to share this film throughout the community this summer and fall.” We Are Chaffee will use information gathered from these community conversations to help determine future direction of the We Are Chaffee initiative and to report outcomes to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and local governments and nonprofits. The event is free with registration required through www.wearechaffee.org/documentary. “A Home in Paradise” is based on the stories of four local people who share their challenges to create a healthy and secure home in Chaffee County while highlighting their efforts to access and bridge the housing, behavioral health, and socioeconomic divide. These stories are interwoven with input from area experts who explain the complexities of local housing and health challenges, and provide hope for the future. The film is directed by Julie Speer Jackson, an Emmy Award winning filmmaker/producer who also serves as the Chaffee County Film Commissioner, and videographer and editor Sarah Hamilton who taught the We Are Chaffee Video Storytelling Workshops at Colorado Mountain College. The documentary was developed with the guidance of a “Creative Committee” consisting of 25 local representatives from diverse parts of Chaffee County. The committee provided guidance throughout the filmmaking process and ensured the film stayed honest and true to Chaffee County. The committee drew on information from Chaffee County’s Public Health and Housing Reports and their real-life experiences with housing insecurity, behavioral health challenges, and the general growing socio-economic divide within Chaffee County. We Are Chaffee is funded through a grant from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment: Office of Health Equity, and is managed by Chaffee County Public Health and the Chaffee Housing Authority. For more information about the We are Chaffee programs, including the documentary, written stories, short video stories, and the popular “We are Chaffee: Looking Upstream” podcast, visit www.wearechaffee.org

Celebrate JUNETEENTH and the re-release of YOU MAY PLOW HERE at the Museum of Authenticity
Celebrate JUNETEENTH and the re-release of YOU MAY PLOW HERE at the Museum of Authenticity
19 June 2024 Wednesday 5:30pm reception & book signing 6-7pm reading from You May Plow Here 124 E 2nd Street, Salida CO 81201 rsvp appreciated, but not required $10 cash or check, kids free Signed copies of You May Plow Here will be available for purchase. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States with the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation on 19 June 1865. Through the voice of Sara Brooks, the narrative, You May Plow Here, documents life after slavery of a free-holding Black family. On 53 1/3 acres of land in Alabama’s Black Belt, Sara Brooks' father took care of 17 dependents. We invite you to celebrate Juneteenth and the recent re-release of You May Plow Here by attending this event or, if you have not already done so, by purchasing a copy of the book on line for you or for one of the Historically Black Colleges & Universities. Edited by Thordis Simonsen and first published by W.W. Norton in 1986, You May Plow Here is an intimate and singular account, vividly told by an African American woman who was born in 1911 in Alabama’s Black Belt and raised along with seventeen additional dependents on the 53 1/3-acre farm her father worked steadfastly to own and keep. Sara Brooks eventually joined the great migration North where, setting hope and determination against hardship, she ultimately achieved homeownership herself. YMPH fills a gap in African American history—we seldom hear about land-owning Blacks from that era, and an account by a woman is rare. The new limited edition of YMPH includes thirty-three duotone, black-and-white photographs of vestiges of the mule farming way of life in Sara Brooks’ Alabama home county and surrounding counties. Made in the 1970s by Thordis Simonsen, these images of people and place give a face to Sara Brooks’ vivid testimonial and help place it in a broader historical and cultural context. An exhibit of these photographs will open in the Museum of Authenticity on 4 July 2024. Published by The Fundamental Note in cooperation with the Museum of Authenticity The campaign to raise $22,000 for the printing of the 2023 limited edition of You May Plow Here is ongoing! In addition to purchasing books for yourselves, please consider purchasing a book for one of the 107 Historically Black Colleges and Universities of your choice. My heartfelt thanks to campaign participants—to date 30 books have been donated, with more to follow with your help. For more information about the book and the campaign, please refer to the events page of the museum website. Museum of Authenticity Tour and Book Signing
Don't miss this: a reading from Dancing Girl a tour of the exhibit HOMING (closes 30 June Sunday) 5:30pm tour of the exhibit & book signing 6:00pm reading from Dancing Girl by Thordis Niela Simonsen Museum of Authenticity 124 East 2nd Street, Salida, CO 81201 Current exhibit: HOMING closes 30 June 2024 Sunday The exhibit HOMING was inspired by the once-roofless house in the Greek Village, Elika, that Thordis Niela Simonsen restored by hand over the course of a decade. Included in the exhibit are works by Thordis and other print-makers that evoke a feeling of home and/or the road home. Thordis purchased the ruin in 1984. In July 2023, she handed the house key over to someone new. Unexpectedly, Thordis let go of the house about the time the exhibit HOMING opened, and so the exhibit became a bookend for a 38-year relationship. When you view the exhibit, ask Thordis, your host, what possessed her to purchase a mandri in a Greek village; how did the villagers respond to the American girl; what lessons did she learn from an unpremeditated Herculean undertaking. Admission is by reservation or by chance; please call the phone number posted on the door: 303.585.1783 $10 for an "invaluable" experience, we are told. more information about the exhibit HOMING

Shop Local Scavenger Hunt
Shop Local Scavenger Hunt
Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce will host a Shop Local Scavenger Hunt June 28 at several downtown businesses. Starting with a pilot group of F Street businesses, the chamber is hoping to give a trial run of the Scavenger Hunt and expand to more businesses throughout the year. The participating businesses include Amicas Pizza, Colorado Wool Company, The Maverick Potter, The Mixing Bowl, Kaleidoscope Toys, Salida Pharmacy and Fountain and YOLO Clothing. The hunt begins when the participating businesses open for the day and ends at 5 p.m. Participants will pick up a scavenger hunt map at one of the businesses or at the chamber office, 406 W. U.S. 50. Using the map, participants will go to the featured stores, which will have a Shop Local poster in the window, and find a staff member. The staff member will then direct them to a brightly colored piece of paper that has a question involving the history of the business. Participants will then find the answer to the question and write the answer on their map. Participants are encouraged to share photos, stories and highlights from their visits to encourage others to join in and support local businesses. Completed maps must be turned in by 5 p.m. at The Mountain Mail, 125 E. Second St. Everyone who turns in a map will be entered into a prize drawing at 6 p.m. at The Mail. Participants do not need to be present to win. If they decide to stay for Business After Hours, from 5-7 p.m. at The Mail, they will need to pay the $10 entry fee but will receive another entry in the drawing. Prizes will include gift cards, exclusive discounts or locally crafted goods. The recommended retail value is $35-$50. The goal of this Shop Local Scavenger Hunt is to foster community connection, bringing participants, shop owners and neighbors together to explore the vibrant tapestry of our community, while driving foot traffic to our local businesses.

Annual Pet Food Drive at High Country Bank in Buena Vista to benefit Ark-Valley Humane Society
High Country Bank is hosting their annual pet food drives in both Salida and Buena Vista to benefit the animals of Ark-Valley Humane Society. Pet food donations can be dropped off at High Country Bank’s Salida location, 7360 West Highway 50, on Friday June 21st from 10AM to 2PM. They can be dropped off at High Country Bank’s Buena Vista branch, 516 US Highway 24 North, on Friday June 28th from 10AM to 2PM. AVHS representatives will be there to accept donations and hand out informational pamphlets about the shelter. All types of cat and dog food will be accepted in unopened bags. High Country Bank is generously donating $1 for every pound of dog food given, up to $500 at each event. “We are incredibly thankful for the continued support from High Country Bank. This annual pet food drive not only helps feed our shelter animals but it also keeps our community pet food pantry stocked. Our pet food pantry is one of AVHS’s many safety net programs. In 2023, 643 animals received food through our pet food pantry. We couldn’t help these animals without support from kind individuals and businesses like High Country Bank" said AVHS Executive Director Nikki Ritter. For questions, please contact Emy Nettleblad at enettleblad@ark-valley.org.
