Tony Furtado

SteamPlant

Of the many great things to come our way again, Tony Furtado will be returning to the SteamPlant Theater Saturday, February 2nd. Traveling as a trio, Tony is joined by Clark Productions favorite touring bassist, Eric Thorin and drummer Carl Sorenson. Very few musicians of any stripe so personify a musical genre as completely as Tony Furtado embodies Americana roots music. Tony is an evocative and soulful singer, a wide-ranging songwriter and a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist adept on banjo, cello-banjo, slide guitar and baritone ukulele who mixes and matches sounds and styles with the flair of a master. A native of Californian who now makes his home in Portland, Oregon, Furtado took up the banjo at age 12, inspired by the Beverly Hillbillies. He won the National Bluegrass Banjo Championship twice, cut his teeth with Laurie Lewis & Grant Street, and signed a solo deal in 1990 with Rounder Records, resulting in six critically acclaimed albums for the label, collaborating with such master musicians as Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Kelly Joe Phelps, and Tony Trischka. Beginning in the late 1990s—influenced by musical heroes Ry Cooder, David Lindley and Taj Mahal—Tony added slide guitar, singing, and songwriting to his musical toolbox and began leading his own band. He especially values the opportunities he has had to tour with A-list artists Gregg Allman, David Lindley, Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, and the like. He has performed at such prestigious music festivals as Telluride Bluegrass, Thirsty Ear, High Sierra, Jazz Aspen, Kerrville, Strawberry, Winnipeg, Sisters and many  others. His latest acclaimed release is Cider House Sessions. Relix hit the nail on the head when writing of Tony: “True talent doesn’t need categories.” Tickets available soon at the SteamPlant Box Office, the Salida Chamber of Commerce, Free the Monkey Salida, Sacred Ground Café and now online here. $16 adv $18 at the door. Thank you, our community for extending your hospitality and support, along with our fine friends at Colorado Central Magazine, Woods Distillery, Vino Salida and Soulcraft Beer. Jon Stickley Trio

SteamPlant

Jon Stickley is no stranger to Salida audiences. His past performances at the former Salida Cafe include with guitarist Shannon Whitworth of the Biscuit Burners and the Colorado Playboys (with Travis Book of The Infamous Stringduster, John Frazier of Hit and Run Bluegrass Band, and Andy Thorn, Leftover Salmon). His Trio has performed for thousands of music fans at the Four Corners Folks Festival for many years. His music today is rooted in his past of flat-picking bluegrass, but I defy you to connect the dots with what the Trio now produces. In reference to the band, it used to be easy to say things like “upbeat, blue-grassy, Gypsy jazz, folk-punk, treading into jam-band territory.” Now they are not so confined. Jon Stickley Trio is a genre-defying and cinematic instrumental trio, whose deep grooves, innovative flat-picking, and sultry-spacey violin moves the listener’s head, heart, and feet. “The latest record from the Jon Stickley Trio flexes new and strong muscles, utilizing more progressive structures and deeper pockets than ever before,” says Producer Dave King (Of The Bad Plus). “All the while, the group retains its place as a modern-thinking acoustic ensemble with one foot in tradition and the other in a bluegrass honored future that allows for the avant garde, punk, and be bop to mix in freely and tastefully.” A part of the Trio since its conception, Fiddler Lyndsay Pruettputs deep thought into her flowing solos, plus she adds little flourishes and sudden stops that elevate the music,” proclaims Nashville’s Music City Roots’ Craig Havighurst. The Trioannounced a change in lineup in January 2018 with new drummer, Hunter Deacon, who is both classically trained and boasts heavy jazz influences. Hunter studied with drummer Keith Brown and received a BM in Studio Music and Jazz from the University of Tennessee. Deacon then went on to complete a six-month residency at a jazz club in Hangzhou, China, where he performed seven nights a week. Join us in ushering in the New Year with a musical session like no other. Get your tickets soon as this concert will sell out! Tickets available at Free the Monkey, Sacred Ground Café, SteamPlant Box Office, and Salida Chamber of Commerce.
