KHEN’s 14th Annual Halloween Bash/Dance Party

KHEN is hosting its 14th Annual Halloween Bash and Dance Party this year - after a pandemic hiatus - at the Steam Plant Events Center. The party will be Sunday, October 31st, starting at 6:00 PM. El Camino will be providing the entertainment. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on Eventbrite. Our Halloween Bash Costume Contest is legendary! Kent Haruf Literary Celebration September 27-29, 2019 The 2nd Annual Kent Haruf Literary Celebration Returns to Salida Salida, Colorado – 6/25/2019 – Literary fiction lovers from across the states will converge on Salida September 27-29th to honor one of the country’s most celebrated hometown writers: Kent Haruf. The event, hosted at the Salida Steamplant Event Center, was established by Cathy Haruf, the late author’s wife, who wishes to honor Haruf’s enduring legacy in literature and the man himself. Haruf is fondly remembered as a humble, generous, kind, and talented gentleman, always keenly interested in the lives of others from which he drew and created rich, authentic characters and brooked lasting friendships. Kent Haruf is a Colorado native, born in Pueblo in 1943, and author of six bestselling novels and numerous short stories, whose work has been translated into 36 languages. In a career spanning more than three decades, Haruf passed after a long illness in 2014 and is survived by his wife, three daughters, and five stepchildren. Novels include The Tie That Binds (1984), Where You Once Belonged, (1991), Plainsong (1999), Eventide (2004), Benediction (2013), and his final work, Our Souls at Night (2015). Plainsong, Eventide, and Benediction also premiered as stage plays at the Denver Center Theater in February 2015. Among Haruf’s honors are finalist for the National Book Award in 1999 for Plainsong, the Wallace Stegner Award from the Center of the American West in 2012, the 2013 Literary Achievement Award from the Mountains & Plains Booksellers Association, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Colorado Humanities and Center for the Book. The Kent Haruf Literary Celebration is limited to 200 attendees, and the cost is $150 per person. All proceeds go to the Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship. Presenters to include Mark Spragg, author of Where Rivers Change Direction; Sue Hodson, former curator of literary collections for The Huntington Library where all of Haruf’s literary papers are kept; Peter Brown, photographer who collaborated with Haruf on the photo/prose book West of Last Chance; Gregg Schwipps, English professor at DePauw University, and former student of Haruf’s; Haruf’s daughter, Sorel; and Carol Samson, Director and Playwright who will direct a theatrical presentation of The Tie That Binds. Open House for the Parks, Recreation, Trails & Open Spaces Master Plan

The Salida Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Master Plan Open House is on September 19th. Engaging as many voices from the community as possible is important to the outcome of this effort. The City hopes to maximize transparency and create a road map from which to make generational decisions about parks and recreation services in the community. Meet us at the SteamPlant Annex any time between 5:30 - 7:30pm on September 19th to share your thoughts on Centennial and Marvin Parks, as well as concept plans for the Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails Master Plan. The City welcomes community voices, so please stop by and join us.

Summerdaze

The dog days of summer aren’t over yet! Please join us on Sunday, September 15th for the last great party of summer. Summerdaze started as a celebration of local music 4 years ago behind Wanderlust Road and continues to rock on the Salida Steamplant Plaza in 2019. Featured Salida bands will be Mo’Champipple & the Miso Horns, Roundhouse Assembly, Blue Recluse, Bighorn, Smeltertown, and Sweet Beet. Music begins at noon and ends at 8:00 PM. This is an all-ages event that is great for the whole family. There will be food and drink available for purchase. Come join the local talent of Salida poets for Poetry Live at the Paquette Gallery. In addition to poet performances this evening, there is also an open mic setting with a 1-2 minute limit per poet. Open mic sign up starts at 6:15 pm. Don’t miss it!

Beavers: Their Landscapes, Our Future

Ben Goldfarb, an Award-Winning Environmental Journalist, reveals in this talk that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers.
