Walden Chamber Music Society Presents: Curtis to Colorado, featuring Janice Carissa, pianist Friday, October 4, 2019, 7:00 pm at the Salida Steamplant On Friday, October 4, Walden Chamber Music Society will present pianist Janice Carissa at the Salida Steamplant. Ms Carissa will be performing works of Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Liszt. A native of Indonesia, pianist Janice Carissa entered the Curtis Institute of Music in 2013 and studied with Gary Graffman and Robert McDonald. All students at Curtis receive merit-based, full tuition scholarships. Ms. Carissa is a Gerry and Marguerite Lenfest Fellow. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Ms. Carissa is a Young Scholar of Lang Lang’s International Music Foundation and the runner-up winner of the 2014 American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Music Festival and School. She was a Star Performer Award Winner of 2012 American Protégé International Music Talent Competition in New York and the Top Prize Winner of the IBLA Foundation’s 2006 International Piano Competition. In 2018, Janice attended Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute where she premiered Timo Andre’s Piano Trio. She performs this trio in a 2019 tour with Miriam Fried and colleagues of Ravinia. Recent career highlights include her solo debut with the New York’s Grammy award-winning Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and a recital tour to New Mexico, Arizona, California and New York. Darcie Smith presents her experiences traveling through Zambia on safari. This unique country remains off the beaten path and offers more active safari experiences beyond standard game drives with renowned guiding, excellent wildlife, beautiful scenery, and intimate safari camps. From walking safaris in the South Luangwa National Park to game drives, fishing, and canoeing in the Lower Zambezi National Park, white water rafting the Class V Zambezi River, and having the unique chance to stay at the only camp inside of an entire national park in Liuwa Plains, she will share her pictures and stories from her collective trips. The Salida SteamPlant is proud to host a new series, Songs OnScreen. We invite all to take a tuneful journey each month with a performance-filled film profiling some of music’s biggest names, both past and present, or a story that is driven by the soul of the music. Monthly screenings take place the last Thursdays of each month (unless otherwise noted). A cash bar, popcorn, and concessions will be available.  

Join us in the SteamPlant theater for an evening full of laughs with comedian Dusty Slay. He is the youngest comedian to have performed on the Grand Ole Oprey stage and recently did his first special for Comedy Central. Hot, Dry, and Smoky: What is the Future of Colorado's Forests in a Changing Climate? with Dr. William Anderegg Dr. Anderegg, assistant professor of biology at the University of Utah, grew up in Cortez, Colorado. His research centers on the intersection of ecosystems and climate change, especially the future of Earth's forests in a changing climate.

Traces of the Trade filmmaker Katrina Browne discovered that her ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. The film follows Browne and nine cousins on a remarkable journey through the history and legacy of New England's hidden enterprise. Holly Fulton and Bill Peebles from the Traces of the Trade project will lead discussion following the movie.  

Comedian JOSH BLUE returns to Salida with his unique brand of comedy, and special guest Elliot Woolsey opens the show. Winner of "Last Comic Standing," Josh has three one-hour specials, has appeared on "The Late, Late Show" and most recently took to the stage on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon."
