Traces of the Trade filmmaker Katrina Browne discovered that her ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. The film follows Browne and nine cousins on a remarkable journey through the history and legacy of New England's hidden enterprise. Holly Fulton and Bill Peebles from the Traces of the Trade project will lead discussion following the movie.

STREAM EXPLORERS with Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA)GARNA and Trout Unlimited in partnership with Salida Recreation are excited to host Stream Explorers again this Spring! Starts Friday, April 26 and continues the next 3 Fridays – May 3, 10, and 17th. It’s from 9 am – 2 pm at the Scout Hut with a fishing expedition the last day. This is a great opportunity for students to engage in hands-on environmental science and learning the basics of fly fishing. This year, there is a cost of $40 per students (for all 4 sessions). There are (unlimited) scholarships available when students apply through Salida Rec (online or at the pool).

Laura Pintane's next Beginning Agility Class will be starting Saturday, May 4th (9-10) for 5 weeks. The free Agility practice runs are immediately after from 10am-10:30am. Agility is a competitive sport designed to test a person’s training and dog handling skills over a timed obstacle course. DOG PARK CLEANUP
SALIDA DOG CLUB(DOG PARK CLEANUP)Twice a year the dog club hosts a deep-cleanup of Loyal Duke’s Dog Park that the city routinely maintains. On May 11th, participants will also be taking down the fencing between the dog park and soccer parking. This renovation should help make parking easier for both user groups. Salida Dog Club encourages the public to come help with this spring cleaning of the dog park. All you’ll need to bring is some gloves, the city will provide all the other needed supplies for getting the task done. You are invited to participate during filming in downtown Salida on Wednesday, May 15. Erin Brown Thomas is a film director from Los Angeles. Erin, along with Selkie Hom, veteran Cirque du Soleil artist are excited to invite your participation in their next film, “HUMAN”, shooting in Downtown Salida. Erin seeks to engage the community in a variety of ways, both in front and behind the scenes. Members of the Salida Circus will have featured extra roles. Visible extras are also needed. Tails on the Trail a 5k Run/Walk for Animals is taking place May 19th at 9 am at Loyal Duke's Dog Park in Salida. This is a family and dog-friendly 5k race with proceeds benefiting the life-saving work of Ark-Valley Humane Society. All runners and participants welcome. Dogs are not required. The parade starts at the Second and F streets intersection with representatives from Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and Marine Corps and go to the river. A wreath will be put into the river in remembrance of fallen brothers, then the assembly will head to the Salida Rotary Amphitheater in Riverside Park for the national anthem and a guest speaker.
