Join GARNA Executive Director, Dominique Naccarato for an hour-long Zoom lecture to learn about an exciting way you can interact with nature anytime and anywhere. Dominique will uncover the basics of birding, including how to identify flight patterns, body and beak shape and function, and bird sounds. She will also introduce a wide range of topics including how to use binoculars, where to find birds, how to attract them to your yard, how we can conserve and provide bird habitat, and how bird behavior can provide insight into what’s going on in our neighborhood or ecosystem. HIKE: Explore the Monarch Pass Forest & Watershed Health Project

Are you curious about the recent fuels mitigation work visible across the valley from Monarch Mountain? Let’s take the learning outside! Join the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and the Arkansas River Watershed Collaborative (ARWC) Lead Forester, Andy Lerch  for an interpretive hike through areas just above Monarch Park, where ARWC and the US Forest Service (USFS) have worked to mitigate fire danger. Get up close and personal with the widespread impacts of the spruce beetle and explore the innovative forestry work that ARWC and the USFS are using to address these problems. PRE-REGISTRATION is required.

11th Annual San Luis Valley Seed Exchange

This annual Seed Exchange connects gardeners, seed producers and the community over agricultural education and exchange.
At its roots, the event is a community seed swap. Over the years, it has grown into an event dedicated to promoting sustainability in the San Luis Valley.
This year’s theme is Food Sovereignty, Storage & Security. The event will feature a speaker series and panel discussions, as well as many local vendors, a community seed swap table, and a few food vendors.
This year, we will livestream the speaker series on YouTube and Facebook Live, for those who would like to attend virtually.

Continental Divide

FibARK's POLE, PEDAL, PADDLE, will take place on April 18th!  This event features a multi-sport race that includes skiing, biking and kayaking. Competitors have followed the spring run off since 1999!  All proceeds from this event go to FibARK's Youth Paddling program, the Ark Valley River Riders. Did you know that invasive species are the number one threat to biodiversity worldwide? Earth Day enthusiasts can help preserve biodiversity and wildlife habitat by learning about the area’s invasive weeds and by helping local habitat corridors at an Earth Day Festival on Friday, April 23 from 9 am to 12 pm. Participants will meet at the Salida Farm to School site by the dog park and soccer fields on Holman Avenue to learn about weed mitigation from Kayla Malone of the Chaffee County Weed Management Office. Participants can also explore the soil health tunnel, scavenger hunt and other soil health activities with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Upper Arkansas Conservation District. From there, volunteers will spread out on the Monarch Spur Trail to mitigate weeds with Salida-area Parks, Open-space and Trails (SPOT), the Central Colorado Conservancy, and GARNA – the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association, or stay at the garden to mitigate weeds with Guidestone Colorado. The City of  Salida will provide weed collection after the workday. The City of Salida will also staff a booth featuring the draft city Climate Action Plan, giving attendees the opportunity to review the plan, which outlines city goals and objectives to address climate change locally, and ask questions. According to event organizers Jean Gabardi and Ellen Olson, the one-gallon pots are still only $16.00 and the geraniums will be available in four colors: Red, pink, salmon, and (new this year) white. The event organizers note that this is one of two fundraisers for the League’s free activities. The other event, the annual poinsettia sale, occurs in November with pick-up in early December. Updates and additional information will be available May 1st on the League’s website.

Walden Chamber Music Society's May concert is just around the corner - mark your calendars now! We will be presenting this event virtually starting at noon on May 6 until midnight May 9. Walden's Artistic Director and Concert Pianist Jo Boatright will be joined by Mark Rush, violin, Matt Diekman, viola and Camilla Bonzo on cello. Virtual GARNA Lecture: Boreal Toad Status & Recovery Efforts

Curious about the mysterious boreal toad? Join GARNA and Stephanie Shively, wildlife biologist for the United States Forest Service Salida Ranger District on Thursday May 20 from 7 to 8 p.m. for a presentation on the status of the boreal toad on the Pike and San Isabel National Forest. Shively will talk about the drastic population decline of the toad, which was once common in the southern Rocky Mountains, and its significance as an indicator of ecological imbalance or change. She will also explain why Chaffee County is an important “stronghold” for the species, the work she is doing to help the toad thrive, the successes she has seen already, and the impending challenges to come. Shively has worked as a district wildlife biologist for more than 20 years, serving in the South Park District in Fairplay, the Comanche National Grasslands, and in the Salida Ranger District, where she has worked the last 10 years.
