Any artists or creatives working in all genres are encouraged to attend and meet like-minded people. This month’s mixer will feature Michael DiMartino for entertainment during the event. This month's exhibition features works by artist Jocelyn Catterson, whose detailed pen and ink pieces are a love letter to the San Luis Valley. Her artwork focuses on specific flora, fauna, and landscapes of the high alpine valley she calls home, drawing attention to the little details that build up the ecology of a place. Ski with a Naturalist with GARNA at Monarch Mountain Join GARNA for a free naturalist tour every other Friday at 11am to learn about forest ecology, wildlife in the winter, the history of recreation on Monarch Pass and the partnership of the USFS and Monarch. A guest volunteer interpreter leads the tour, sharing additional information from their area of expertise.  The tour is free, a valid lift ticket/pass is required.  Dates: February 2, 16, March 1, 15 Have you ever wondered… Who owns the land we’re skiing/boarding on? When did Monarch open and what is the oldest run? How can animals thrive in this winter environment? What kinds of trees live up here? What is causing many of the trees to die? How can you tell when avalanches are more likely to occur? What are the names of some of the surrounding peaks? How is Monarch different from other Colorado ski areas? Join a Volunteer Interpreter for a fun, free on-mountain educational tour. Learn about the history of recreation on Monarch Pass, the ski area-USFS partnership, forest ecology, wildlife in the winter, and more. Meet Friday, February 2, 2024 at 11:00 am at the sign near the Cat Skiing Yurt across from the Pioneer lift. Guests of all ages and abilities are welcome. The tour is free, follows all beginner runs and lasts for about an hour. A lift ticket or season pass is required. Jee LOVES the color Green. Jee paints green SQUARES, green CIRCLES, and even green SQUIRCLES! But when a new artist comes to share Jee’s space, his world is turned upside down, as he is introduced to all colors of the rainbow. A weekly group for parents or caregivers of young children. Offering a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space to gather with a professional and other parents. This group will provide empathy, information and resources and practical help to parents as they navigate the challenges of raising small children. FREE CHILDCARE and light snacks will be provided. When we all do our part, we keep forest healthy, protect our parks, keep wildlife strong and ensure everyone is welcomed to enjoy these remarkable places together. Join the Greater Arkansas River Nature Association (GARNA) and the Salida Regional Library for a three-part naturalist education series to train the public on how to be effective naturalists and stewards of our public lands. Come join us to learn! Each program is stand alone, so attend one, or attend all. The program meets at 5:30pm at the Library in the Tolkien Room. The program is free but limited to 30 people. As a supplemental event to One Book Salida - A community read, this program is presented by Salida Arts & Culture in partnership with Salida Regional Library. This year's book selection is Robert Justice's "They Can't Take Your Name," a gripping crime novel laced with atmospheric poetry, jazz and literature and set in the heart of Denver’s black community. Taking cues from the novel, this evening's program presents a look at two visionary artists, one prominently figuring into the fiction novel -- poet Langston Hughes and musician Ornette Coleman. Watch Langston Hughes from a 1958 television broadcast recite his poem, "The Weary Blues" (1925) to jazz accompaniment with the Doug Parker Band followed by the feature documentary on Ornette Coleman and his evolution over three decades. Returning home to Fort Worth, Texas in 1983, it chronicles Coleman's boyhood in segregated Texas and his subsequent emergence as an American cultural pioneer and world-class icon. Open to the public. BVMA’s AIARE 1 – Snowshoe Specific

Buena Vista Mountain Adventures Presents: DECISION MAKING IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN, DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR SNOWSHOERS March 22-24, 2024 Do you want to snowshoe in or near avalanche terrain? This class is for students who use snowshoes to travel on snow. AIARE 1 is a three-day / 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management. Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught). LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the AIARE 1 course, the student should be able to: Develop a plan for travel in avalanche terrain Demonstrate the ability to identify avalanche terrain Effectively use The AIARE Risk Management Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting Demonstrate effective companion rescue Click here to register and for more information!
