Ornette: Made in Amercia- Film at Salida SteamPlant

Salida SteamPlant

As a supplemental event to One Book Salida - A community read, this program is presented by Salida Arts & Culture in partnership with Salida Regional Library. This year's book selection is Robert Justice's "They Can't Take Your Name," a gripping crime novel laced with atmospheric poetry, jazz and literature and set in the heart of Denver’s black community. Taking cues from the novel, this evening's program presents a look at two visionary artists, one prominently figuring into the fiction novel -- poet Langston Hughes and musician Ornette Coleman. Watch Langston Hughes from a 1958 television broadcast recite his poem, "The Weary Blues" (1925) to jazz accompaniment with the Doug Parker Band followed by the feature documentary on Ornette Coleman and his evolution over three decades. Returning home to Fort Worth, Texas in 1983, it chronicles Coleman's boyhood in segregated Texas and his subsequent emergence as an American cultural pioneer and world-class icon. Open to the public. Registration required: FILM: Ornette: Made In America Tickets, Thu, Mar 21, 2024 at 6:00 PM | Eventbrite Cash bar and limited concession available.
