They will be working on the lower portion of the trail, which has become very loose and "cupped" (aka it's a rocky trough). No experience is needed, tools and training will be provided, as well as free lunch/drinks from Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop and Soulcraft Brewing. (There will be N/A beer and seltzer, too.) Curtis to Colorado, Featuring Pianist Avery Gagliano
Walden Chamber Music Society, a non-profit organization which has which brings classical chamber music to our mountain community, announces the beginning of its 21st season. They start the season on October 8 with the fourth presentation of our Curtis to Colorado concerts. These performances feature artists from the acclaimed Curtis Institute of Music. This year, the performer will be pianist Avery Gagliano. Avery won First Prize and Best Concerto Prize at the 2020 National Chopin Competition and was the only American semifinalist at the 18th International Chopin Competition in 2021. Avery has performed in Colorado with the Fort Collins Symphony, with the Bravo!Vail Festival, and at the Aspen Music Festival where she won the Concerto Competition. To learn more about Avery or to listen to some of her performances, go to her website www.averygagliano.com . Again, this Curtis concert will take place on Sunday, October 8 at the SteamPlant in Salida at 3 PM; a reception will follow in the ballroom. This concert is a fundraiser to help Walden to continue bringing music to the schools of Salida and Buena Vista. Curtis to Colorado tickets are $35 and can be purchased on the Walden website, the SteamPlant website, or in person at the SteamPlant Box Office. Students K-12 will be admitted free.

League of Women Voters Looks at Senior Services
Services for seniors in Chaffee County are becoming a greater necessity as the average age of county residents rises. In 2020, the median age in Chaffee County was reported as 49.3 years--up from 41.8 years in 2000—and indicating an increasing population of those 65 years and older. On Monday, October 9th. The League of Women Voters of Chaffee County will host a panel discussion exploring what services are available to this growing population. Members of the panel will include Molly Bischoff, LNHA, Chaffee County Public Health Department Aging Well coordinator; Tom McConaghy, Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments director; Aubrey Tamietti, Arkansas Valley Helping Hands program coordinator; and task force leaders for Places to Age, a grass roots nonprofit focused on bringing assisted living and memory care to Chaffee County. The panel and monthly league meeting will be held at the Poncha Springs Town Hall with the League meeting and social beginning at 11:15 a.m. and the educational program following from 12:00-1:00 p.m. For more information about the League, visit lwvchaffeecounty.org

The Salida Pregnancy Resource Center will hold its Annual Banquet/Fundraiser and Silent Auction on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. Once again, the event will be held at Grace Church, 1320 D Street, Salida. Attendees will enjoy a gourmet, catered dinner and the opportunity to bid on numerous Silent Auction items. Learn more about this year’s school board candidates on Sunday, October 15th from 3 to 5 pm in the Pinon Room at the Buena Vista Community Center. The event will feature the eight candidates running for the five open seats on the board: For District 1, incumbent Brett Mitchell and challenger John Casey Martin; District 3, Norman Nyberg; District 4, George Richardson; At Large four years, Mallory Brooks and Montana Brown; and At Large two years, Paula Dylan and Trinda Windle. This year's modified format will include introductory statements from each candidate, a lightning round of questions submitted by local media, questions from members of the audience present and on zoom, the traditional “Candidating,” and a closing followed by a “Meet & Greet.” During the lightning round each candidate will be asked the same question, rotating who goes first with each question. Join KHEN at The SteamPlant on Saturday, October 21st for a fabulous fall afternoon filled with unique spirits, delicious appetizers, and live music. Attendees will be able to taste spirits from more than a dozen distilleries. Plus, new this year, distilleries will have bottles of their spirits on sale at the event! This will be a wonderful opportunity to add some amazing bottles to your liquor cabinet. Doors open for VIP attendees at 3 pm. Enjoy the first hour in a more intimate setting and try a craft cocktail tasting from our own Wood's High Mountain Distillery. General admission runs from 4-6 pm, and all attendees will receive a custom tasting glass to take home. Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy some amazing non-alcoholic elixirs and enter to win some awesome prizes in our bucket raffle! All proceeds from the event benefit kHEN. Salida Regional Library announced it is looking for sponsors and volunteers for the second annual Salida Fantasy Faire, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 28 in Alpine Park. The event is a locally organized tribute to all things fantasy and make-believe, according to a press release. With elves, goblins, witches and warlocks, the fair has been likened to a mini Renaissance festival, but with more dragons and less historical accuracy. The mission of the FanFaire is to create a community-friendly festival that will celebrate imagination and whimsy by featuring a variety of events, music and vendors. Hosted by Salida Regional Library, the event’s title sponsor is Moonlight Pizza & Brewpub. Other sponsors include Chaffee Printing Center, NatersArt and WeArkSalida. Additional businesses or individuals who wish to participate as a sponsor should contact the board no later than Friday. Merchants, performers and artisans are invited to join the festival by submitting their application no later than Sept. 30. The board is also searching for volunteers to assist with tasks such as setup/teardown, game supervision, park protection and guest assistance. Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor, vendor or volunteer should email salidafantasyfest@gmail.com for more information.
