Salida Film Festival: “A Home in Paradise” Premier

The Chaffee County “We Are Chaffee” storytelling initiative has been developing a community-focused documentary for the past year and is hosting two film premieres and several free showings throughout the county this summer and fall. The dates for the premieres of “A Home in Paradise” have been set for Friday May 10th as part of the Salida Film Festival and will include a panel discussion with the people who share their stories in the film, the directors and producers, and local experts on housing and health. Join us after the premiere for an upscale social with appetizers & desserts by Kalamatapit & a cash bar. Take your turn on the red carpet & photo booth. ~ Red Carpet Attire Encouraged ~ Music provided by the local musicians who created the music for the film. Tickets can be purchased at the Salida SteamPlant website, April 22nd. The second premiere date is Wednesday, June 5th at the Salida SteamPlant and will be a free community event with only registration required. Arbor Day on S Mountain 2024

The Salida Parks department has 270 native tree saplings to plant, and they need your help!  This is our first year in a multiyear effort to begin a reforestation project on S Mountain, in collaboration with GARNA, Colorado Conservancy, and Colorado State Forest Service . We will be planting Pine and Juniper saplings in two different locations on the mountain, so please be prepared to be involved in digging, walking, and carrying materials - tools will be provided, bring gloves if you have them, and dress appropriately (closed toe shoes, layers, etc.)! League of Women Voters May Meeting to Highlight 2024 Colorado Climate, Environmental Legislation

Colorado Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteers Susan Campbell and Bob Blackburn are the featured speakers for the May 13th, Chaffee County League of Women Voters Meeting at the Poncha Springs Town Hall, 330 Burnett Ave, Poncha Springs, CO  81242.  The meeting will begin with an 11:15 am social and business hour followed by the speakers’ presentations from 12 to 1 pm. The speakers will provide information about the climate and environmental bills that passed the 2024 Colorado Legislative Session which concludes on May 8. These bills are in the areas of agricultural tax credits, water quality, electric vehicle charging permitting reform, energy and carbon management regulation, wildfire mitigation and more. Susan Campbell is involved in climate policy and advocacy and serves as co-chair of the Colorado Citizens’ Climate Lobby State Legislative Committee.  She also engages in project work on ecological systems and habitat restoration with Wildlands Restoration Volunteers. Bob Blackburn, a retired contractor and IT manager, co-chairs the Colorado Citizens’ Climate Lobby Legislative team. “This will be a highly informative session pertinent to many of the climate and agricultural issues facing our county,” said League program organizer Bonnie Davis.  She added, “The general public is welcome to attend and learn about the latest updates in this fast-changing area." Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is excited to announce that due to high demand and a sold out event in March at the library in Salida, CCPH will be presenting a workshop on emergency preparedness and go- kit distribution open to all ages at A Church in Salida on Tuesday, May 14th from 11am-noon. The workshop will be presented by CCPH Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator, Sophia Gibb, and CCPH Director, Andrea Carlstrom. The go-kits include essential items and necessary supplies that you can easily grab during an emergency. Supplies include: flashlights, water bottles, and first aid kits. Recipients would put all supplies in a backpack or “Go-Bag” to easily grab in case of an emergency like a wildfire. There will also be information presented on evacuation checklists, insurance coverage, preparing pets for disaster, and much more. “Chaffee County Public Health is excited to be able to offer this presentation again, due to the high demand we had for the initial presentation. It is crucial that every household has a go-kit ready in case of emergency. We hope that all Chaffee County residents who are interested in what to do and what to bring during an emergency will register to attend. Free go-kits will be available for those who register for the event” says Sophia Gibb, CCPH Emergency Preparedness and Response Coordinator.
