County Addresses Community Wildfire Readiness

Citizens can determine their risk by viewing new maps at public meetings Oct 2-3 Residents and homeowners are encouraged to attend meetings to learn about their wildfire risk and help develop steps to improve the community’s readiness for a severe fire. Meetings take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the Poncha Springs New Town Hall and on Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Buena Vista Community Center. Sessions are free and open to the public. The meetings offer an opportunity to view and comment on new maps that show fire risk levels across the county. The maps model where to treat the forest, how to do it and at what cost. The work is developed by local fire departments, land management agencies, county of Chaffee and the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute at Colorado State University, as part of the Envision Next Generation Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Maps show the location of homes and other infrastructure such as cell towers, power lines and water resources. They also show wildlife habitat, trails and streams that could be affected by fire and post-fire mudslides and flooding. Computer modeling analyzes the cost-per-acre to conduct prescribed burns and thinning in specific areas, indicating where Chaffee Common Ground (Ballot Issue 1A) funds will be put to use to create healthier forests and reduce wildfire danger. “Community input is essential as we work to finalize the maps that will guide Common Ground spending on agency treatment and program priorities,” Envision Chaffee County Co-Lead Cindy Williams said. “Come have your voice heard and be part of the plan for a fire ready Chaffee.” The meetings are hosted by Envision with Chaffee County Commissioners and the USFS Salida Ranger District, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado State Forest Service, local fire districts and county Office of Emergency Management. The partners will seek grants to leverage Common Ground revenues and ultimately increase the pace of forest treatments. The fund is generated by a sales tax measure approved by voters last year.

With a small student body of about 175, Curtis ensures that each young musician receives an education of unparalleled quality, distinguished by a “learn by doing” philosophy and personalized attention from a faculty that includes a high proportion of actively performing musicians. Curtis students hone their craft through more than 200 orchestra, opera, solo and chamber music offerings each year and programs that bring arts access and education to the community.
