League of Women Voters to Explore Artificial Intelligence in Elections

Artificial Intelligence. How does it work? What are the possibilities and threats? How should we understand it in the context of our elections?  These and other questions will be discussed at the League of Women Voters Chaffee County (LWVCC) Monday, September 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Congregational United Church of Christ, 217 Crossman Avenue.  The panel, “Artificial Intelligence in Elections,” will feature Colorado House District 27 Representative Brianna Titone (D), who will present background on AI-related legislation passed in the 2024 legislative session. Chair of the State General Assembly Joint Technology Committee, Representative Titone was a primary sponsor of legislation requiring political candidates to clearly label advertisements that feature content generated by artificial intelligence (HB24-1147). She was also a lead House sponsor of a second successful bill establishing consumer protections for artificial intelligence (SB24-205).  Dr. Dan Bishop, a retired professor of chemistry from Colorado State University, will join Representative Titone to provide a primer on AI, describing its development and highlighting some of its remarkable advances alongside some of its risks.  A question and answer period will follow the presentations.  Kate Shea, LWVCC Treasurer and the AI program planner, noted that exploring this topic aligns with the League’s goal of empowering voters to make informed decisions.  Understanding the complex and evolving topic of AI and sharpening our ability to recognize disinformation from deepfakes is important to voter decision making.  LWVCC members and the public may submit questions in advance to Kate at kmoirashea@msn.com  The LWVCC monthly meeting and social will precede the presentation at 11:10 a.m.
