Santa’s Parade @ Monarch Mountain

Yea, kids! Be a part of Santa’s Christmas Eve ski and snowboard parade at Monarch Mountain. Meet Santa at the top of the Caterpillar lift at 1:00 PM on Christmas Eve. Santa will lead the parade down to the lodge and all participants will receive a candy cane at the end of the parade. No sign up is necessary but all participants will need a season pass or lift ticket to access Caterpillar surface lift, have their own equipment and able to ski and board on green runs, stop, and turn to the right and left. Following the parade, Image Makers photographers will be at the top of the Caterpillar taking pictures of Santa and children.

Join Salida Parks and Recreation for our annual new year's day 5k. This event is a fun way to kick off the new year on the right foot and have fun while doing it! Wear your best costume and walk or run this beautiful 5k course from down town Salida leading out the Monarch Spur Trail and back into town. The event will be stopwatch timed and the top 3 overall male and female finishers will receive prizes from 7000 Feet Running Company! This year we will also be giving prizes to anyone who finishes with a time of 20:22, middle of the pack, oldest and youngest racers. This year we will be offering day-of registrations! In an attempt to encourage you to register online though, the day of registrations will be $25! Just commit to the race, it's only $10 online! Just sign up early! You can also call the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center at 719 539 6738 and they can help you sign up if the online process isn't your cup of tea.

Evidence shows the visuals, intentions, and goal setting supports positive outcomes and success. Carving out time to reflect and plan while being surrounded by fun like-minded support is a form of self-care; a plus for well-being! We’ll do a short meditation to clear our minds, be open to creativity, and allow for visions to arise for 2022. Music will be playing and laughter will be had. All supplies for the vision board will be provided. Please bring extra magazines, pictures, or crafting supplies you’d be willing to contribute to the event. We’ll be crafting on the floor, bring a crazy creek or something comfy to sit on (some chairs and tables available if necessary). Come have fun, build excitement for 2022, and create a tangible vision board that can be used all year long as your compass for intentions and goals. Have attended in years past? VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to take down Christmas Mountain

Christmas Mtn will be turned off at midnight Sunday Jan. 9th. In order to keep the bulbs safe and from fading over the summer we are going to remove the bulbs from the stringer ( the wire with the sockets ). There are about 8,000 bulbs and the bulbs cost $1.09 each. In past years we removed the stringer, but this is a lot of work. We think this will be easier. We are looking for volunteers to remove the bulbs. We will have a 5 gallon bucket at each ornament that will be marked for that ornament. We will collect the buckets and store them at the shed.   Anyone interested in helping is welcome. Meet at the parking lot on S Mtn at 9:30 Saturday Jan 15. Walk up to the display and you will be given direction about where to start. Wear study boots , warm clothes ,bring water, sunscreen, gloves, and a canvas shopping bag. This is weather dependent. If we get 20 people it will take 5 hours.

Town Challenge Race

Monarch Mountain will kick off its annual Town Challenge ski and snowboard races on January 21, 2022. New for 2022, Town Challenge will be scored using individual results only. There will be no team entries. Races will be held on Fridays, January 21, 28 February 4, 11, 25 and March 4, 2022, weather permitting. Entry forms and fees are due January 19, 2022. Entry fee is $25 per person payable at the Monarch Season Pass Desk. Registration is available at the season pass desk or online at Town Challenge Online Registration The Town Challenge is a series of six races. Competition categories include A-League Skiing, B-League Skiing, Snowboard, Masters (females older than 40, males older than 50) and Super Seniors (older than 62), telemark, and snowboard.  All skill levels are welcome to participate. “Everyone is welcome to take on the challenge of being a racer,” Monarch Event Coordinator Kathryn Wadsworth said. “Town Challenge is set up for the recreational skier, telemarker or snowboarder and races take place on Freeway near the base of Monarch Mountain ski area.” For more information and to register contact Event Coordinator Kathryn Wadsworth at kathryn@skimonarch.com or 719-530-5013.

The 17th Annual Backcountry Film Festival is back in person! We believe in the power of humans and their spirit. Our mission is to manifest that power in communities through stories of activists, adventurers, and the outdoors to inspire and activate. The Backcountry Film Festival is a year-round, community program presented by Winter Wildlands Alliance that brings messages relevant to WWA’s mission and on-going stewardship, policy and advocacy initiatives throughout every season. A collage of human-powered stories and backcountry-inspired experiences, BCFF brings wild conversations and inspires action to communities that celebrate the present while looking towards the future. The 17th Annual Backcountry Film Festival will be screening documentaries and ski movies about athletic pursuit in the mountains, artistic vision, friendship, and how the snowsports community is adapting to a changing environment.
