Director: Cord Jefferson Opening Night Film – Sponsored by Colorado Office of Film Television Media Salida SteamPlant 7:00pm - Thursday, May 9 Thelonious “Monk” Ellison’s writing career has stalled because his work isn’t deemed “Black enough.” Monk, a writer and English professor, writes a satirical novel under a pseudonym, aiming to expose the publishing world’s hypocrisies. The book’s immediate success forces him to get deeper enmeshed in his assumed identity and challenges his closely-held worldviews. Film is Rated R. Winner of the 2024 Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Salida Film Festival: “A Home in Paradise” Premier

The Chaffee County “We Are Chaffee” storytelling initiative has been developing a community-focused documentary for the past year and is hosting two film premieres and several free showings throughout the county this summer and fall. The dates for the premieres of “A Home in Paradise” have been set for Friday May 10th as part of the Salida Film Festival and will include a panel discussion with the people who share their stories in the film, the directors and producers, and local experts on housing and health. Join us after the premiere for an upscale social with appetizers & desserts by Kalamatapit & a cash bar. Take your turn on the red carpet & photo booth. ~ Red Carpet Attire Encouraged ~ Music provided by the local musicians who created the music for the film. Tickets can be purchased at the Salida SteamPlant website, April 22nd. The second premiere date is Wednesday, June 5th at the Salida SteamPlant and will be a free community event with only registration required. After the movie showing, We Are Chaffee will host a complimentary dinner and facilitated community discussion. Read the press release here!

Set against the backdrop of the filmmaker’s quixotic quest to build an art in a field in Maine, the film heads far afield – to salt mines in the Alps, fjords in the Arctic, and ancient libraries in the Sahara – to illuminate the strange world of archives, record-keeping, and memory. Film is Not Rated. Preceded by THE LOST SEASON (directed by Kelly Sears, filmmaker and CU-Boulder Cinema Studies & Moving Image Arts professor), the film premiered at 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Talking Heads’ David Byrne uses a fictional Texas town as the backdrop to satirize the eccentricities of America in TRUE STORIES. Starring John Goodman, Swoosie Kurtz and Spalding Gray. Film is Rated PG.

Arbor Day on S Mountain 2024

The Salida Parks department has 270 native tree saplings to plant, and they need your help!  This is our first year in a multiyear effort to begin a reforestation project on S Mountain, in collaboration with GARNA, Colorado Conservancy, and Colorado State Forest Service . We will be planting Pine and Juniper saplings in two different locations on the mountain, so please be prepared to be involved in digging, walking, and carrying materials - tools will be provided, bring gloves if you have them, and dress appropriately (closed toe shoes, layers, etc.)! The group will meet at Mountain Heritage Park at 9am on Saturday May 11th. Thank you for joining us! Click HERE to sign up to volunteer!

RIVER MAMMA (dir. Sarah Hamilton) – Ride along on a lifelong raft guide’s journey through single motherhood, bringing her 8-month-old to the only job she ever knew while grappling with societal expectations. BODY OF A LINE (dir. Henna Taylor) – In this animated documentary, Madeleine Sorkin undertakes an intimate and creative journey to climb the most difficult rock climb above 13,500 feet in the world: the Dunn-Westbay Direct on Longs Peak in Colorado.
