Freedom Walk and Pig Roast to benefit BV HOPE and Elizabeth Anne’s Haven

Throughout the day and the valley on Saturday, October 19th, the sister organizations of Bringing Our Valley HOPE (BVHOPE) and Elizabeth Anne’s Haven (EAHaven) will bring attention to human trafficking and the need for a survivors’ sanctuary in Chaffee County. Starting in McPhelemy Park in Buena Vista with registration at 10 a.m., BVHOPE will conduct the 10th annual Freedom Walk through town at 11 a.m. with a return to the park for refreshments and free prize drawings. Participants will carry signs aimed at increasing awareness of human trafficking and hand out flyers describing how onlookers can get involved. The second Walk in the valley will start at the First Presbyterian Church (7 Poncha Blvd.) in Salida with registration starting at 1 p.m.  The Walk begins at 2 p.m. and after covering several blocks downtown, will return to the church for refreshments and prize drawings. John DiGirolamo, BVHOPE Board of Directors president, is encouraging participants at both locations to bring friends and family members.  “And we’ll  reward those who do with prizes.”  For each person who brings two guests, they and their guests will receive K's ice cream cone coupons. For those who bring five guests, they and their guests will receive an insulated water bottle fanny pack. In the afternoon, the focus will turn to raising money to build a haven for women who have survived human trafficking.  At 5 p.m., the VFW of Johnson Village will host a pig roast to benefit Elizabeth Anne’s Haven–”a place to heal and start a new life.”   The event will feature a roasted pig from Fish & Whistle Farm, a lamb and goat from 30Audi80 Ranch, assorted side dishes, a cash bar and prize drawings.  The cost is $15 per plate for adults, $10 for children under 12. “It’s a full day for us to work together to get the word out about human trafficking and to let our community know how we can all address the issue,” said Becky Martin, president of EAHaven Board of Directors. We hope communities throughout our valley will join us in this important mission.”

Bodie miller’s film The Paradise Paradox

Ivy Ballroom 1012 Front Loop, Buena Vista, United States

October 18, 2024 For immediate release: Chaffee County, CO- In an effort to reduce stigma and foster open dialogue about mental health, Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is proud to present free screenings of Bode Miller’s documentary, The Paradise Paradox. This powerful film sheds light on the mental health crisis facing America’s mountain towns, showcasing innovative solutions that empower communities to seek help and develop effective coping strategies. Join us for this important conversation! Following the film, CCPH will host a dynamic panel discussion featuring local mental health experts, community leaders, and representatives from the ski industry. This is an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the film’s themes, engage in meaningful discussions, and explore the innovative initiatives being implemented in our own communities. We encourage everyone to participate and share their insights as we work together to break down barriers and foster mental well-being. This timely initiative is supported by the El Pomar Foundation which is prioritizing supporting solutions to the mental health crisis that our society is facing today, especially with youth.  “We are honored that the El Pomar Foundation is helping CCPH to bring this important film about mental health in resort communities, along with local conversations, to Chaffee County.  This is a topic that effects everyone, and we hope that the public takes time out of their busy schedules to attend one of these film events and contributes to the dialogue around how to make Chaffee County strong and resilient,” said Kirsten Love, CCPH Behavioral Health Coordinator/Navigator. CCPH identified mental health as a topic priority in its 2021 Community Health Assessment and 2022-2026 Community Health Improvement Plan.  For almost a decade, CCPH has been collaborating with community partners and stakeholders to ensure a robust local mental health system and the need has only grown in recent years. You can join CCPH at the following: Tuesday, October 22nd in Buena Vista at the Ivy Ballroom in the Surf Hotel. Doors open at 5:00pm, film at 5:30pm, panel discussion to follow. Cost: Free + Free popcorn!
