Chaffee County residents are encouraged to be proactive against wildfires by joining forestry professionals and firefighters during a free open house in May.
Open houses take place on Tuesday, May 6 at the Buena Vista Community Center, and on Thursday May 15 at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds. Both events start at 6 p.m. Attendance is free.
We do interior carpentry, floors, cabinets, doors, tongue and groove, ship lap, base and case trim, crown molding, closets etc.

The City of Salida is pleased to celebrate the grand opening of its new Fire Station. Neenan Archistruction, a fully integrated design-build firm based in Fort Collins, led ground-up development for the state-of-the-art new station, replacing the city’s previous fire station that had aged out of useful life. The city’s original fire station was more than 100 years old, the seventh oldest active firehouse in the country, and lacked the capacity to address the needs of a modern fire station.
March 10, 2025: The Rocky Mountain Region of the USDA Forest Service is hiring up to 50 temporary wildland firefighters and fire support positions for the 2025 fire year across national forests and grasslands in Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Firefighter positions include engine operators, hotshot crew members, handcrew members, helitack crew members, fuels technicians, fire lookouts, dispatchers, and other fire support positions.

Salida Mountain Trails (SMT) is launching a new program this spring to teach mountain bike skills to local youth.
The program, Salida Youth Cycling (SYC) is a continuation of the well-established Absolute Youth Cycling (AYC) program. This new chapter ensures the legacy of AYC will continue to inspire and empower the next generation of riders in the Salida community, with SMT aiming to grow the program to provide even more opportunities for young cyclists to develop their skills, confidence, and love for biking.
SYC will offer two six-week-long courses, one in the spring (April 4 – May 9) and one in the fall (dates TBD). Registration for the spring session will open on March 4th at 8:00am.
Courses provide guided instruction from licensed bike coaches and many passionate volunteers. Classes are broken into groups based on school grade, ranging from first through eighth grade.

Updated on Nov. 22, Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is excited to announce the completion of its Access to Healthcare Survey which was conducted in collaboration with the League of Women Voters of Chaffee County. The survey, which was open from May 15th through July 31st, 2024, is meant to capture the strengths and opportunities for improvement of our local healthcare system while also giving valuable feedback to healthcare stakeholders so that they can make informed and strategic decisions about future programming and systems. CCPH received 1273 full responses to the survey and collected copious amounts of qualitative data. One key highlight is that all healthcare sectors were rated over 4.0 on a 5.0 scale. Another important point to note is that while there are significant perceived needs that exist related to the healthcare landscape in Chaffee County, overall, 76% of respondents said they are satisfied with their physical health while 80% state the same about their mental health.

The Salida Theater Festival is a in their second year as a non-profit unity, as of 2024. The Salida Theater Festival is an all volunteer organization designed to market and promote the Salida Theater Festival. The volunteers bring together multiple theater production companies to participate in each year’s festival. These companies are mainly local to Chaffee County, but invitations also go out to outside companies. In 2023, the Salida Theater Festival had a company in Chicago, and in 2024, there will be one from Denver.

Zack and Mike started Badfish in Zack’s garage on 11th street in Salida back in 2009. They started out making some of the first river surfing specific surfboards in the world. Badfish then progressed to making stand up paddleboards, rafts and related accessories and selling their products all over the US as well as Canada and Japan. D&J Rare Gems was founded by Donna and John Rhoads in 1985 as a source for rare gems for the gemologist and collector. Initially a mail order company for rare gems, D&J Rare Gems expanded into fine gems in 1988. Lapidary services were added in 1989, providing well cut fine and rare gems to the industry. During October of 2005, John Rhoads attended the extension courses required for his Graduate Gemologist diploma through the Gemological Institute of America. He is now a G.G. as the result of his success in completing these courses.
In 1990 we opened our retail jewelry store in Salida, Colorado offering fine jewelry, wholesale gemstones, and mineral and crystals to the public as well as gemstone cutting and repair. Today, we meet people by appointment as well as travel to various gem shows around Colorado.

The Victoria Tavern building was constructed in 1900 by Mildred “ Millie” Ohmertz Johnson. Some consider her as Colorado’s first Female real estate developer. During the first 9 years the Building served the young and booming railroad community as a butcher shop, movie theater, mercantile and hotel, until eventually ending up as a tavern in 1909. For 115 years the “Vic” was a place where not all were welcome, as a brothel, and rough and tumble tavern full of railroad men and miners it developed a lurid reputation keeping the “respectable” folk away. In the 1980s Peter Simonson took over the bar and ran it as a bar and music venue until 2020. Now after being closed for 4 years we are excited to re- open the doors to the community. Housed in a beautifully remodeled late-19th-century building in Salida’s Historic District, the Museum of Authenticity is an intimate museum of art & culture. Set against a backdrop of art created for art’s sake and handmade utilitarian objects that are—indisputably—works of art, MoA seeks to inspire the visitor’s own bold adventures in art and life. Founding director and curator, Thordis Niela Simonsen, taught biology and cultural anthropology before immersing in the visual and literary arts, restoring a roofless Greek village house stone by stone by hand, and creating the Museum, which opened in 2020.
The Museum of Authenticity’s changing exhibits juxtapose works from two collections: Thordis’ works on paper, including monotype prints, paintings, graphics, and photographs; and early- to mid-20th-century works on paper, primarily by Colorado and New Mexico artists and including youth, women, and unknown artists.
