– Road Project Announcement –

Region-wide striping operations to begin May 13 in southwest and south-central Colorado. Click HERE to see where in Chaffee County they will be doing this.

Highway 50 closed indefinitely in Gunnison and Montrose Counties due to bridge safety concerns. Detour routes have been suggested — Interstate 70 and U.S. 160 — both of which would add hours in travel time.  Click here for more information.

CDOT begins project to improve CO Hwy 172 Work will take place from Ignacio to the US 160 junction at Elmore’s Corner

Culvert repair project is set to begin on April 1. Work will take place along four roadways in two south-central Colorado counties: US 24, US 285, US 50 in Chaffee County, and Highway 160 in Costilla County. Expect up to 15 minute delays, alternative traffic and reduced speeds. This project will be implemented in phases from April-August. The Colorado Department of Transportation in cooperation with prime contractor, United Companies, will improve the intersection of US Highways 50 and 285 near Poncha Springs in Chaffee County. The project will realign and reconstruct the existing three-way configuration into a four-way signalized intersection to improve safety and traffic flow, as well as resurface seven miles of US 50 from the US 50/285 junction to Maysville, mile point 210-217. Project start date is April 15, 2024 and will go through October 1, 2024. Suzanne Morphew Autopsy Released. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Continues as Lead Agency in Investigation. The Office of the Chaffee County Coroner can confirm that the autopsy report for Suzanne Morphew has been released pursuant to the Colorado Open Records Act (CORA). Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) remains the lead agency for the on-going Suzanne Morphew investigation and any related inquiries should be directed to CBI. The Chaffee County’s Sheriff’s Office and Chaffee County Coroner’s Office will not respond to questions, issue statements, or provide information related to this investigation. Additionally, the El Paso Coroner’s Office has no jurisdiction on this case and has also stated they will not be responding to inquiries. CBI’s media advisories can be found at https://cbi.colorado.gov.

City of Salida
The City of Salida proudly announces the completion of the historical restoration of the beloved Caboose, generously donated by the Gill Family. A ribbon-cutting ceremony, provided by the Salida Chamber of Commerce, will be held on May 9th, 2024, at 1:00 PM, commemorating this significant milestone in our city’s history. The City of Salida is seeking Chalk Artists for the Salida Chalk Art Festival! Like the Madonnari tradition of street painting in Italy, local artists will take to the streets and create colorful murals of chalk and pastel in real time in downtown Salida.  The date for the Chalk Festival is Saturday, June 29. Selected artists will receive one set of (24) colored pastels, an event “Artist” t-shirt, breakfast and lunch, and a $250 stipend.  Please see the Information Page and Application Page attached here for full details. The Salida Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 705 H Street on Friday, April 20, 2024, at approximately 1:38 AM. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered flames venting through the roof of the residence. Read the full press release here!

Colorado Trails Symposium
The Colorado Trails Symposium is looking for sponsors to help provide meals and donations for attendees during the conference.  The Colorado Trails Symposium provides inspiration, connection, and education for trail professionals to help meet the challenges and opportunities of managing trails on public lands.  Trail managers from around the state will meet in Salida on September 25 & 26th, 2024, to highlight success stories, share lessons learned, and continue to promote positive recreation experiences through presentations and site visits hosted during this two day event.  Sponsorships will be utilized to provide hot meals, refreshments, and snacks during the symposium with each sponsor being recognized at the symposium for their support towards trail management in Colorado.  Other donations needed include raffle prizes and site visit support which may include serving as a site visit host, offering shuttle services, or labor support.  For more information, please visit https://www.coloradotrailssymposium.net/ or contact Dani Cook at Danielle.cook@usda.gov.

We Are Chaffee
The Chaffee County “We Are Chaffee” storytelling initiative has been developing a community-focused documentary for the past year and is hosting two film premieres at the SteamPlant. The first is Friday, May 10 at 4:30pm as part of the Salida Film Festival and will include a panel discussion with the people who share their stories in the film, the directors and producers, and local experts on housing and health.
