(October 1, 2024) – Osaké Steak and Sushi Bar (Osaké), located in downtown Salida, has been recognized with a prestigious second-place award in the renowned 2024 Signs of the Times International Sign Contest, the longest-running global competition in the sign industry. Hosted by Signs of the Times, the largest and oldest sign publication in the world, the contest showcases the most exceptional signage projects from around the globe. The competition received nearly 190 entries from 66 sign companies spanning the US, Canada, and Europe, with Osaké’s sign standing out for its unique design and flawless execution.
The signage, designed by Roger Cox of VIM Creative, is a bold and modern statement that perfectly marries the contemporary feel of Osaké Steak and Sushi Bar with the historic architecture of its building. “This was a multifaceted project that began as a logo development to establish the branding direction for owners Kirk and Paula’s Coult’s new venture,” said Cox. “The logo would be incorporated into their web and print collateral, but once the branding took shape, I created the design theme for the exterior signs.”
One of the key challenges of the project was adhering to local sign code width restrictions, which inspired the vertical format of the sign, allowing it to project over the sidewalk while still being proportionate to the large building. “The upscale modern quality of the design contrasts beautifully with the elegant lines of the historic building,” Cox continued. “The use of metal, wood, gold leaf, and raised dimensional elements gives the signs a unique visual story in Salida’s charming downtown landscape.”
The Osaké project has transformed this corner of downtown Salida, blending contemporary design with timeless architectural details, and creating a visual harmony that enhances the town’s aesthetic. The sign complements Salida’s character, elevating the local environment in a visually unforgettable way that aligns with both the town’s charm and the restaurant’s modern vibe.
Handcrafted with a variety of high-quality materials to withstand the harsh Colorado mountain climate, the signs also required custom steel support brackets due to the old brick and architectural obstructions on the building. The intricate installation was a technical feat, with modern LED bullet lights integrated into the design to ensure the signage remained well-lit without detracting from its overall impact.
Cox added, “This award is incredibly meaningful and I’m honored to have been recognized with a second-place award for Osaké’s signage and a first-place award for another project.”
