Do you want to snowshoe in or near avalanche terrain? This class is for students who use snowshoes to travel on snow. AIARE 1 is a three-day / 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management. Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a backcountry trip, to understand basic decision making while in the field, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught).

Women’s Intermediate Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding

Women’s Intermediate Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding is a one-day course that builds your physical and intellectual backcountry knowledge so you can get the most out of your avalanche education and backcountry tour. During your intermediate group lesson, you will develop more advanced skinning, transition, and downhill techniques and be introduced to essential trip planning and navigation tools, weather observations, and avalanche forecasts. Enjoy a longer tour with multiple aspects. You’ll leave this course feeling confident in your backcountry skiing/riding abilities.

Snowpack Uncertainty – 02/11/2025 from 6:00-7:30 pm at Salida Mountain Sports 110 F St, Salida
Join us for a FREE informative talk at Salida Mountain Sports on managing uncertainty in the snowpack. All backcountry enthusiasts welcome – skiers, splitboarders, snowmobilers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers. Buena Vista Mountain Adventures (BVMA) Owner, Tommy Gram-Ahlene will lead this community conversation. Learn about the 9 different avalanche problems and how to observe, manage, and make informed decisions when touring in the backcountry.
What to Expect:
- An overview of the formation of the layered mountain snowpack
- Avalanche Problems and how to observe and manage them
- Weighing out evidence and uncertainty in the snow to make better decisions.
- Build on the skills you already know about avalanches and build decision-making skills for managing uncertainty in the snow.

AIARE 1 is a three-day / 24-hour introduction to avalanche hazard management. Students can expect to develop foundational skills in preparing for and carrying out a backcountry trip, understand basic decision-making while in the field, and learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occurs and someone in the party is caught). AIARE 1 is for ANYONE, regardless of the method of travel, who wants to recreate in or near avalanche terrain. Participants may have attended some awareness classes or workshops or completed an Avalanche Rescue or AIARE Prep course; there are no prerequisites for this course.
