THURSDAYS@6 SUMMER CONCERT SERIES KICK OFF!! The much anticipated summer concert series presented by the Go-To-Guide, High Country Bank and Salida Recreation will kick off Thursday, June 1 with Red Sage. Red Sage is a reggae/rock band hailing from the front range. This series of 10 concerts will happen every Thursday evening in Riverside Park from 6-8pm (except June 15). The concerts are free, but donations are collected each week to benefit the Salida Recreation Youth Scholarship Fund. The fund is available for any qualifying family to use towards any Salida Recreation sponsored program or swim pass. SUMMER CAMP FRIDAYS! Everything you love about our CAMP Friday program during the school year – let’s take it outside for the summer. We will focus on all kinds of movement and fitness- jumping, running, hiking, wiggling, and spinning to get your little ones active and learning. Every week we will be at a different park around Salida taking advantage of walking paths, grassy areas, wandering streams, and play structures. PARENT/TOT SWIM LESSONS! This American Red Cross Aquatics course will familiarize young children with the water and guide parents in ways to help their child to become a swimmer. The course will focus on water safety, advice on supervising water activities, and hints on helping your child become more confident in the water. Ages 6 mos –3 years. Parents are required to be in the water. Saturdays, June 3, 17, 24 and July 1 at 9am (45 minute class). Cost is $45, includes pool admission and lesson for 1 child and 1 adult. Additional adults may join for $10 (entire session). Call or come by the aquatic center to register. Payment must be received at time of registration. Scholarships available. No drop-ins accepted.
SUMMER GROUP SWIM LESSONS! Preschool through Level 4 swim lessons begin Monday, June 5. There will be five sessions throughout the summer. Session 2 begins Monday, June 19, session 3 begins Monday, July 3, session 4 begins Monday, July 17 and session 5 begins Monday, July 31. All sessions are Monday through Thursday for 45 minutes, 8 lessons per session. Register for the 10 am or 11 am start time. Preschool levels (ages 4 & 5) are offered every session and time EXCEPT sessions 1 and 3 at 10 am. Levels 1-4 (ages 6+) offered at every session and time. Register by the Friday before the session begins: $50/session of 8 lessons. Registrations after that: $55/session of 8 lessons. Scholarships available. COMMUNITY DISC GOLF!
Disc Golf is a sport that’s like regular golf, only you play with a Frisbee instead of golf balls. The object is to make it to a metal basket in as few shots as possible. Disc golf can be played from school age to old age, making it one of the greatest lifetime fitness sports available. Join Salida Recreation and High Mountain Air Disc Golf Club in learning and playing disc golf with your friends and family. These will be progressive events tailored for families, starting with rules and basics of the game and ending with an official round or small competition. Bringing your own equipment is encouraged; but we will have some discs available. FUNCTIONAL INSPIRED KETTLEBELL TRAINING!
Basics of kettlebell strength training with an emphasis on safety, proper technique and form. Functional training is developing the movements of everyday life so we can ace the movements that we necessitate or desire. This class includes warm up, strength, cardio, stretching and cool down. ROCKIES BASEBALL SKILLS CHALLENGE!
Join us for fun, challenging competitions in batting, throwing, and base running…just like a real Rockies player Wednesday, June 7 at 4pm. Boys and girls ages 6 to 13 will be broken out into skills, gender and age categories. The winner in each category from Salida will advance to a sectional competition (held in Pueblo) with a chance of advancing to state finals. Competition takes place at the big field at Marvin Park, located along Hwy 291. Registration begins at 4pm with challenges beginning at 4:45pm. This is FREE to all. Spectators welcome.
LINE DANCING BEGINS JUNE 7!
Learn the steps, feel the music and practice to the beat! Betty Scofield will be back again to teach this terrific class. Betty specializes in showing a wide range of people with varying ability levels how to have fun on the dance floor. No matter when you start, or at what level, you’ll catch up in no time. This is a great opportunity to get out and move to music while getting exercise at the same time. No partner required. BODY WEIGHT BOOT CAMP!
Bodyweight training is functional fitness at its finest. It is a convenient way to improve balance, strength, heart health, boost positive mood and cognitive function. POOL CLOSED FOR SWIM MEET!
The Aquatic Center will close for public swim at NOON on Friday, June 9 and will remain closed ALL DAY Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 while our Salida Cyclones host the annual Alicia Leavitt Memorial Swim Meet. There will be no individual soaking pools or showers available during this time frame. Show your support and come cheer for your hometown swim team – Go Cyclones!

Salida Recreation presents the Land Events for the annual FIBArk celebration. Races include the Tenderfoot Hill Climb Thursday, June 15, 5K and 10K Road Races Saturday, June 17, 10K Trail Run Sunday, June 18 and Mountain Bike Races Sunday, June 18. Pre-registration is available online at fibark.com or in person at the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, and is encouraged! All pre-registrations must be received by noon on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. Race day registrations will be charged an additional $5. Entries are non-refundable and non-transferable. PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT! It’s time for a night on the town! Bring the kids to the Scout Hut for a fun night of games, movies, treats, and playtime! Salida Rec’s staff and recent Babysitter 101 graduates will be here to entertain your child while you enjoy a date night or just a little solitude.This is also an excellent opportunity to meet new babysitters with great training so you can treat yourself more often! Children must be potty-trained. The first Parents’ Night Out is Friday, June 23 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Chisholm Park, 324 Hunt Street. Cost is $10/child, $5/additional sibling. ROCK CLIMBING FIELD TRIP WITH RMOC! Hang with Salida Recreation and RMOC guides for this day of scaling the cliffs at Falls Gulch. Tucked along the river in Bighorn sheep canyon, this crag is great for diverse groups. Half of the climbs are short and easy for beginners. The other half are longer and more difficult which gives you plenty of time on the rock. This trip is suitable for all ability levels, from beginner to advanced. Equipment and transportation provided-please specify shoe size when registering. Bring your own lunch, water, sunscreen and layered clothing. It can be very hot in the canyon at Falls Gulch-be prepared!

RIVER AWARENESS CLINIC WITH RMOC! We are so lucky to have the Arkansas River flowing through our backyards and for all the activities that are centered around it – rafting, fishing, paddle boarding, tubing and swimming. As fun as it can be, we also want to be aware of how dangerous it can be. This clinic is designed to introduce young adults to basic concepts of river safety and awareness. There will be an emphasis on essential equipment and how to use it. Participants will also practice swimming in the current. Respect the River! (cost covers all transportation and equipment; bring own lunch, sunscreen, fleece or wool long-sleeves, and dry clothing).
