The Salida Museum was opened in 1954, using two back rooms of the Hot Springs Pool. The museum was founded and operated by Harriet Alexander. When Mrs. Alexander died in 1971, she left funds to build the current museum building.

The current location has been in use since 1975, serving the City of Salida and Chaffee County as a source of historical information. The Museum Association also owns and maintains the Maysville School and the Smelter Smokestack as historical landmarks.
