Note from the Director

May in Salida is always a teaser month. It can be warm and sunny one day and a blizzard the next. I guess it just makes June seem that much nicer.

Business people around town are gearing up and sprucing up in preparation for what we hope will be a great summer of fun and prosperity. All indicators point to a busy season.

Don’t forget about the annual Chamber Golf Scramble and Business After Hours on Wednesday, May 12th at the Salida Golf Club. Call the Chamber today to reserve your team tee time. The cost is only $160 per 4 person team and remember your team must have a least one person of the opposite sex. (You do the math) Scott and Greg are pulling out all the stops to provide a great buffet for our munching pleasure so make plans today to join us for this great tradition. Special thanks to Yellowbook for helping sponsor this fun time.

We just got word from the Colorado Division of Insurance that The Chamber has been approved to offer a comprehensive health insurance program to our membership. We are planning to have businesses signed up with an effective date of June 1. Please call The Chamber so we can get you on our list to have an agent contact you with all the gory details. We are truly excited about being able to offer our membership this much needed benefit.

The Chamber is pleased to announce a new feature to get the word out about events, meetings and business info. Each week we will compile the latest happenings and email them to the membership. If you would like to be a part of this program, simply send us a short message with a link to your website and we will include it in the Wednesday edition. Information should be sent directly to announcements@salidachamber.org. Get your info to us and we will get it out to the community.

More good news. The Salida Chamber has joined Facebook at www.facebook.com/salidachamber .We hope everyone will become a fan and follow all the latest and greatest happening at the Chamber. Please post your happenings and help us spread the good word about Salida.

Don’t put your winter duds away just yet and keep your shorts and flip-flops handy. May will challenge your wardrobe, but that’s why we love it here. See you next month.

Best regards,
John Engelbrecht
Executive Director

Log Cabin Antiques is Business of the Month

Log Cabin Antiques, owned by Darwin and Linda Hibbs at 225 E. U.S. 50, Salida was selected as April Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month.

In business since 1976, the store is a group of five old log cabins, each filled with treasures from the past. “It was an easy choice this month, and long overdue,” John Engelbrecht, chamber executive director, said. “They've been chamber members almost 30 years and a major part of this community. Darwin and Linda are phenomenally civic minded. They make sure they give back to and support the community in many ways.” Darwin was with the Salida Police Department 37 years and was chief for 11 years. He was served on the Salida school board four years.

Linda explained the antiques complex is on the former Otis White ranch.

“He came here in 1864 and established one of the early homesteads. He had a big apple orchard here, too,” she said.

The Hibbs live in the circa 1880 home on the property.

“We deal with all kinds of antiques, but ‘primitives’ are our favorite,” Linda said. “We like the down-home things.”
