Friends of the SteamPlant Membership Drive

Friends of the SteamPlant, an independent, all-volunteer organization not connected with the City of Salida, have begun their Annual Membership Drive. The Friends support the SteamPlant with volunteer help, and by raising funds for major capital needs and rent subsidies for qualified local organizations.

Scott Adams, President of Friends of the SteamPlant, likes to think of the SteamPlant as “a Family Room for the region that The Friends help furnish, keep neat for visitors, and financially assist the community to use.” We have members from all over Chaffee County and would like to have more," Adams says.

The financial support that comes from the Annual Membership Drive is vital to supplement grants and other fundraising efforts. The Paquette Gallery, Strawn-Grether Sculpture Garden, and the Missoula Children's Theater are partially supported by Membership funds.

Membership levels begin at $50 for individuals and $100 for businesses. In addition, a $250, $500, and $1,000 levels are available. Both individuals and businesses are encouraged to join. Various rewards, such as vouchers, discounts, tee shirts and mugs, are available at each level. The higher the level, the better the reward. According to Adams, the primary reward is supporting the volunteer efforts for the enrichment of the community. Donations to The Friends, a non-profit, are tax deductible.

You can become a member on-line at www.steamplant.org, by phone at 719.530.0993, or pick up a membership brochure at the SteamPlant and mail it to Friends of the SteamPlant, P.O. Box, 758, Salida, CO, 81201. “Friends need Friends,” say Adams, “We want you to be ours.”

Volunteers Wanted

Volunteers for Outdoors Colorado is thrilled to be partnering with SPOT & the City of Salida to conduct the first VOC trail construction project in the Salida area!  We hope this will be the beginning of many more volunteer opportunities.

VOC’s involvement on the Salida Mountain Trail project represents our commitment to help foster and strengthen local volunteer efforts in the Salida area.

While we will be recruiting volunteers for this project from Front Range communities, we also are working hard to encourage Salida area residents to come out and join in the project.

Typically, we work with local merchants in communities adjacent to VOC projects in securing area donated goods and services such as gift certificates or locally made products, we can use as raffle items for volunteers during the weekend.

Area merchants interested in donating goods or services may respond directly to me at

jalmstead@voc.org or by phone at (303) 715-1010, ext 120.  More details and information.

Boys and Girls Club of Chaffee County is Business of the Month

Boys and Girls Club of Chaffee County Tuesday was named Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce May Business of the Month.

Chamber president John Engelbrecht said, “The club has the highest give-back return of any organization in the community. They literally touch every life in our area.”

Executive director Brett Haydin said the club, with branches in Salida and Buena Vista, serves more than 500 youths.

“I'm just tickled we got this award. It’s great for the board and staff to get recognized for all the work we do for the kids and the community.”

The club was established in Salida late in 2005 for elementary and middle school age youths.

A site was added in Buena Vista in 2007 to address needs for after school programs, especially among elementary school children.

Haydin said staff personnel will start a new program, “just for teens,” this summer. Other new programs include a mountain club where youth can get engaged in outdoor activities three days a week.

Activities will include hiking, biking, fishing and camping with family members, he said.

More information about the club is at www.bcgchaffee.org or by calling 539-9500 or 395-5715.

New Chamber Member - Claudia Stover of Growing Spaces

Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce members recently welcomed Claudia Stover of Growing Spaces – Salida to membership.

Growing Spaces are Greenhouse Domes which Claudia represents. Manufacturing is done in Pagosa Springs.

Her expertise is in being able to teach benefits of the greenhouse dome and she shares her dome as a demonstration site for gardeners wanting to step inside the indoor garden and retreat.

What makes the greenhouse system different, Stover said, is the combination of seven unique features making the Growing Dome the most energy efficient greenhouse on the U.S. market.

Without relying on electricity or fossil fuels, the Growing Dome provides an optimum indoor ecosystem for year-round gardening and a natural, peaceful retreat.

Able to withstand a heavy Rocky Mountain snow load, high wind and sub-zero temperature, she said it’s always a pleasure to step inside the dome and be surrounded by year-round organic vegetables, flowers, and herbs.

According to a Greenhouse Book by Ortho Press, “A home greenhouse is an enchanted place where you can shut the door on a winter storm or a frenzied world, and quietly putter amid lush greenery, earthy aromas, and a peaceful hush.”

“In a few words,” she said, this Growing Space is “more than a greenhouse, its a way of life.” To learn more, call Stover at (719) 221-1012 or 539-6468.
