Salida Colorado Calendar for May 2010

 

1 ~ The Tenderfoot Cancer Climb.
This is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society in Salida. It is an annual event and has picked up tremendous steam this year.
It takes place on Saturday May 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. with registration in front of the bandshell in Riverside park, and a free survivors breakfast in the Scout Hut. At 9:30 a.m. there will be a ceremony honoring survivors followed by the 3.5 mile hike around Tenderfoot. At 11:30 a free lunch and entertainment by Don Richmond will round out the morning. We should be completely wrapped up by 1:00 pm.

1 ~ 25th Annual Caddis Festival Fundraising Banquet sponsored by Collegiate Peaks Anglers Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Chaffee County Fairgrounds, CR 120, Poncha Springs. 1 ~ The annual Sweetwater Fly Fishing Clinic which coincides with the world-famous caddis fly hatch is being expanded this year to include a non-juried wildlife and fishing-themed fine art show. It is our goal to showcase and provide exposure for Colorado artists. The Festival itself is held from noon Friday, April 30 through noon Sunday, May 2 at Sweetwater River Ranch located directly on US Hwy 50, a major east-west corridor, an outstanding location along the banks of the beautiful Arkansas River against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Texas Creek, Colorado. The fine arts show will be Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 am- 4:00 pm.

Festival art will be displayed outdoors, rain or shine (or snow!) on the grounds of Sweetwater River Ranch, 24871 US Hwy 50, Texas Creek, CO, 81223 on Saturday, although any artist electing to remain through Sunday noon may do so with no additional booth fee. Display area: a shaded grassy area. First come, first served for locations. Display space: no larger than 10’ x 10’ Festival art will include wildlife/fishing-themed fine artwork in ceramics, drawing, fabric, glass, graphics, jewelry, metalwork, painting, pastels, photography, sculpture, wood and mixed media. No crafts, please. The $25 booth fee is to help defray show expenses only. Deadline for application is March 31, 2010. 8 ~ “Keep on Singing Loudly”: the Power of Politics and Song workshop hosted by emma’s revolution on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 4pm at SteamPlant Event Center, Sackett and G Street, Salida, CO 81201. The workshop is free to the public. Donations of $10 - $20 to KHEN's Adopt-a-Watt Fund are appreciated, but not required. This event is sponsored by Ellen and Don Bauder and emma’s revolution.

emma’s revolution will be performing a benefit concert for kHEN 106.9fm Free Range Radio at 8pm at SteamPlant Event Center.. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door, pay what you can. Advance tickets go on sale starting April 14th - Salida SteamPlant box office - (719) 530-0933.

 

8 ~ K9s for a Cause - Fundraiser K9 entertainment show to benefit the Salida High School Life Skills Special Education Class.

K9s for a Cause is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide spectacular K9 entertainment to benefit various causes. They are a group of talented & dedicated dog trainers in various canine sports & disciplines. Their show will thrill and delight any age group, children through seniors. The show will include freestyle Frisbee, agility elements, and other fun canine antics. All the performing teams are veterans of the competition circuit including State & World Cham-pions or Finalists and have performed throughout Colorado.

8 ~ Salida Mountain Trails (SMT) requests volunteer assistance for the trail workday & lunch on Saturday, May 8th, 2010. Meet at 9:00AM at the Kiosk near the Spiral Drive gate.

Trail work will consist of trail construction and maintenance around “S” Mountain. After the trail work is completed, the trail crew will regroup at about 2:00pm behind Absolute Bikes and The Salida Cafe to enjoy food, drink, and conversation.
Please come equipped with heavy work or hiking shoes - preferably high tops, work gloves, water, snacks, and sunscreen.

8 ~ Come down to Benson's Tavern (128 North F St) at 7:00 PM, for the Salida Mountain Trails (SMT) fundraiser.
We will watch the award winning film "Freedom Riders". Freedom Riders is a story of a small, core group of riders who evolved from covertly building rough and unsustainable trails, to creating a precedent setting relationship with the Forest Service and building some of the best Freeride trails in the country.There will be a raffle for a cruiser bike donated by Absolute Bikes, and a silent auction. Suggested donation for the fundraiser is $5.

12 ~ Annual Salida Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble - at the Salida Golf Club. Teams consist of 4 members, with at least one member of the opposite sex. Fee is $40 per person or $160 per team. 15 ~ 19th Annual Arkansas River CleanUp/GreenUp (CUGU) - Volunteer sign-ups will take place the day of the event in Salida and Buena Vista from 8:30 a.m.until 9:30 a.m. Pre-registration for groups and individuals can also be arranged. Volunteers will receive trash bags and our collectible CUGU button, and at noon we will host our Volunteer
picnic at Riverside Park in Salida.

21 - 23 ~ ALPINE ORCHESTRA SPRING CONCERTS

The Alpine Orchestra wraps up its 19th season with a series of concerts.

Friday, May 21st, Annunciation Catholic Church, Leadville, 7:30 p m.
Saturday the 22nd,, Mountain Heights Baptist Church, Buena Vista, 7:30 p m.
Then a Sunday matinee on the 23rd, Salida Steamplant, 3 p m.

The 40 member symphony, conducted by Dr. Farrell Coy, will feature familiar dance music..both classical and popular: Hungarian Dances by Brahms, Polovtsian Dances by Borodin, even big band sounds with dance themes. Also on the program, Royal Fireworks by Handel...Jupiter and Mars by Holst.

The public is invited. There is no admission charge but contributions are welcome to help defray expenses.

Wade in the Water is Colorado Art Ranch’s seventh Artposium, and begins the fourth year of programming.
