Reservations Required! $30, which includes a donation to the Kent Haruf Memorial Scholarship Fund.
At 7:00, each of the four finalists will read a portion of their submission for the Scholarship.The finalists all chose to write a short fiction piece. Hennerey Laughlin of Canon City High School wrote “Sleep for Now”, Kyndall Newell of Salida High School submitted “Sweet Revenge”, Berlin VanNess from Buena Vista High School wrote “Running With The Wind”, and Michael White from Canon City High School shared “The Banjo and Freedom; Do Your Part”.
The Scholarship and Award Certificate will then be presented to the winner by Jennifer Dempsey, since Cathy Haruf will be recovering from hip surgery.
The Kent Haruf Memorial Writing Scholarship was established in 2015 by The Book Haven in Salida, Colorado in memory of author Kent Haruf (1943-2014). Haruf’s six award-winning novels, all set in the fictional town of Holt, Colorado include Plainsong (1999), Eventide (2004), Benediction (2013), and Our Souls at Night, published posthumously May 26, 2015.
The Scholarship is open to High School juniors and seniors who submitted works of fiction or creative non-fiction. Four finalists were selected in January, 2017, and they will have the opportunity to gain writing insight during the Workshop, prior to the Banquet. Susan Tweit will be the Workshop Facilitator and Master of Ceremonies at The Awards Banquet.
