Business After Hours
Note from the Chamber
Dear Chamber Members and non-Chamber Members:
On April 9 the Salida Chamber, the Vaqueros, chamber business member Rocky Mountain Outdoor Center (RMOC), the City of Salida and Friends of the SteamPlant, will host Business After Hours from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Salida SteamPlant. Our message is “Summer Kickoff – Stay Another Day.” We encourage you to attend and to take in all of the positive aspects of Salida and the surrounding area.
We will have representation of organizations such as Arkansas River Outfitters Association (AROA), the U.S. Forest Service, AHRA, Salida Mountain Trails, Hot Springs, Hutchinson Ranch, Art Walk representatives and many more.
Personal invitations will be made to those people who have first contact with our travelling public: convenience store clerks, retail staff, wait staff and bartenders. It is our general working public that sets the tone for many decisions the travelling public makes. Knowledge is key. Simply put, awareness of our surroundings makes for a happier customer and, in turn, a satisfied business owner.
Please encourage your staff to get involved and attend the mixer on Wednesday, April 9. Whether you’re in recreation, dining or lodging, we all work together to get more heads in beds!
This is an excellent opportunity to network, swap ideas and to mix and mingle with businesses you often don’t get to visit during the busy summer season. Cross promotion sells. Let’s work together to promote our area as a haven to explore and return to Stay Another Day.
The board of directors will be contacting businesses to invite them to host a vendor table. Space is limited so please take this opportunity to attend. There is no fee for chamber members to participate. A fee for non-chamber members is $20 which may be credited toward a membership if they decide to join at a later date (three-month expiration).
The board will also be contacting our persons of “first contact” to offer them free entry into the event.
The general public is invited to attend too. As with other Business After Hours functions, the fee is $7 at the door, affording drinks and food from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you April 9. Reports last year were great, and we are positive that there is more to learn, share and explore. Our next Winter Kickoff will take place in 2015. We will alternate years, concentrating on hosting one “kickoff” per year.
Thanks for all you do!

Colorado Creative Industries Summit Opportunities for Local Artists
Jan. 30, 2014. Salida was recently selected to host the 2014 Colorado Creative Industries Summit May 1 – 2, 2014. The theme of this year’s Summit is Creative Convergence, which focuses around the concept of collective impact, and will explore ways to coordinate efforts and work toward the common result of building a strong and vibrant creative community in Colorado. This will be the 3rd annual Summit, and will target creative entrepreneurs, emerging creatives, municipal and non-profit cultural workers, and creative district leaders. Topics address practical, nuts-and-bolts approaches to creative businesses and how-to’s for working collectively with creatives, municipalities and businesses.
Because the Salida Creative District is home to many local artists, there are opportunities for creatives to showcase their talent during the Summit. These opportunities include design and construction of centerpieces to be placed on tables during the Summit meals, welcome bag design, construction and gift item inclusion and catering. All of the Request for Proposals are available to review on Salida’s Creative District website, www.salidacreates.com. Deadline for submissions vary so please see the website for more information and visit the site daily as updates are being posted.
The annual Colorado Creative Industries Summit is a chance for creative professionals to meet and network with fellow creatives from around the state. Registrants will learn from Colorado’s most inspiring speakers and presenters through workshops like Creative business 101, financing your art, legal issues, social media, and website enhancement. Those interested in attending the Summit, should visit www.coloradocreativeindustries.org/summit for more information.

‘Witness’, as a practice, is…
A time to see & be seen, to spit up and stir out.
A place to bring all of our pieces, meet, rearrange, dissect, expose, caress, deconstruct, observe, re-construct, ravage…be with them.
An embrace of our unknown, a recognition of our bodies as transient vehicles for our transformation, a heap of failures, an acceptance, an offering, a ritualistic platform for locating content, a journey through our expectations, resistances, and degrees of performativity in the event of of ‘being’ in a generating body.
Through active exploration, we formulate a space to dive the wreck of our creative process(es), to explore here…the language of our breath, our emotions as motions, the impetus of our creation(s).
We have personally developed our ‘Witness’ practice over the past two years and have taught multiple ‘Witness’ classes and workshops in the Unites States, Vienna, Turkey, and Berlin.

Colorado Central Telecom, your local source for internet service is now reaching nearly 300 homes and businesses. CCT launched its first customers in January of this year and the local response has been terrific. The company came to Chaffee County at the behest of Wendell Pryor and the Economic Development Council. With investment from companies such as Monarch Ski Area and a few others, along with an SBA loan from Collegiate Peaks Bank; CCT is able to bring real, true, high speed internet to thousands of homes and businesses that before had few or no options. Even homes and businesses in the center of town that may have had okay service, are finding that they now have another option, in many cases they are getting faster internet service and for less money.
Colorado Central Telecom is indeed a locally owned and operated company, not only do we care about the customers we serve, we actually know them! Choosing service from Colorado Central Telecom means your money stays in the community. Our operations manager, customer service person and installers live in Chaffee County, providing the kind of personal service that has nearly become a thing of the past. We offer very affordable rates with NO data caps (meaning you can stream as much as you want), and NO contract!

The Conundrum Group, LLP Attorneys at Law
Megan and Ben Kahn of The Conundrum Group continue to serve businesses and families in and around Chaffee County with legal representation in the following practice areas:
Business – We handle the legal needs of any business, including complicated transactions, litigation or other disputes with third parties. With more than two decades of experience in complex commercial litigation representing business interests in a wide range of projects and disputes throughout the nation, we bring a tough but sensible approach to the big picture resolution of business opportunities, challenges and conflicts. We are also equipped to address most trademark and intellectual property needs of small businesses, and most local government issues that businesses face.
Real Estate – We can handle all legal phases of a real property investment, from the initial transaction to any asset exit. We bring a deal philosophy to our real estate work, understanding the total transaction and tailoring strategy depending on the big picture role of any particular legal issue. This deal cycle approach to counseling helps manage client risk and maximize the value of the real property asset, while navigating any local government or other developmental hurdles.
Natural Resources – We can handle all legal phases of a natural resources transaction or dispute, including associated litigation. Although we usually are on the owner and/or developer side of water, land, ranching, resource extraction, environmental and regulatory issues, we have broad experience working with governmental, municipal and community groups with respect to natural resource matters as well.
Family – We can handle all types of family law, including divorce, legal separation, parenting time (custody), decision making, adoption, property valuation and distribution, child support, spousal maintenance (alimony), juvenile matters, grandparent rights, and matters involving the Department of Social Services or other government entities. We focus on the big picture and strive to improve families and their situations.
Mediation – We also provide impartial third party mediation services, or can offer advocacy in such contexts. Megan Kahn has been a certified mediator since 2003, provides neutral mediation projects in the Group’s practice areas. Benjamin Kahn has served as an advocate in hundreds of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) matters, including binding arbitrations.
Visit www.conundrumlaw.com for more information, or call Megan or Ben at 303-377-7890 to discuss your legal conundrum and how we may be able to assist you.

Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA)
Winter may not seem like the time for outdoor recreation, but the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is open year-round for fun along the Arkansas River. Although the high mountains get plenty of unparalleled powdery snow, ideal for skiing and snowmobiling, trails along the river, especially in the Salida area and through Big Horn Sheep canyon, remain pleasant for a walk or hike. And when the kids have cabin fever, get them out of the house and roast some hot dogs and marshmallows, with a jug of hot cocoa to ward off the chill, at one of AHRA’s recreation sites equipped with a grill or fire pit. Gotta love those rosey faces! Plus, you never know when you’ll spot some bighorn sheep or deer grazing on the winter foliage.
AHRA’s visitor center in downtown Salida is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. all winter, so stop by or call 719-539-7289.
