Business of the Month and Ribbon Cuttings: May ’17

Business of the Month: Salida Circus

Chamber awards Salida Circus Business of the Month

Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce awarded its May Business of the Month honors to Salida Circus.

May also marks the 10-year anniversary for Salida Circus, which it will celebrate with a festival May 26-29.

Michael Varnum, chamber president, said Salida Circus was nominated by a group of its peers for its work in the community.

“Reaching an estimated 650 youth per year, Salida Circus combines arts, recreation athleticism and entertainment while boosting confidence, teamwork and physical fitness of its participants,” Varnum said.

Jennifer Dempsey, founder and director of Salida Circus, also provides help through the Salida Circus Outreach Foundation.

Dempsey said the foundation offers classes, workshops and camps to local children and adults.

“We currently run eight weekly workshops and three annual camps,” Dempsey said. “Right now at the SteamPlant we have our first-ever circus art show.”

Salida Circus strives to make all feel welcomed and involved with its activities, Dempsey said. “There’s something for everyone,” she said, as demonstrated by the circus’s recent and upcoming activities.

“We’ve just completed our 4- to 7-year-olds’ circus class,” Dempsey said. “We’re about to start our parkour class and our intermediate aerial class. We’ll be doing adult aerial through the summer.”

Though the circus aims to provide entertainment, Dempsey said she knows Salida Circus isn’t something that can work without a positive attitude from those involved.

“The success of the circus is due to everybody’s circus spirit and cooperation and willingness to give everything a go,” Dempsey said.

Get to know the new businesses we’re honored to welcome as chamber members this month. Don’t hesitate to reach out and say hello. After all, connection, community and collaboration are what membership in the Salida Chamber of Commerce is all about!

Tim Brown Photography

Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce welcomed Tim Brown Photography to its membership with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the studio at 225 F St. Owner and photographer Tim Brown has been practicing the art of photography for more than 35 years. Brown said his passion for travel, adventure and culture elevated the dimension of his work. Being an extreme whitewater kayaker allows him to capture images on whitewater that are only accessible by kayak. Brown uses warmth and good humor to elicit his subjects’ true spirit in his studio and environmental portraits. An award-winning master of lighting, Brown said he aims to produce fresh, clean, timeless and compelling photography. His Salida studio has a long history of photography, having been a studio in the early 1900s, which has made it an ideal location for his “Tintypes,” also known as wet plate collodion photography. The technique, dating back to the Civil War era, involved printing portraits on materials such as tin, because paper was not available. To learn more about tintypes and Tim Brown Photography visit salidatintypes.com or timbrownphotography.com or call 221-1115.
