Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce awarded December Business of the Month honors to Las Camelinas Friday at the restaurant at 128 W. First St.
Lori Roberts, chamber executive director, said owners Juan and Gaby Orejel and their son Zef Rivera give back to the community and earned the honor for that reason.
“You guys have done so much, and you’re a big part of historic downtown,” Roberts said. “They’ve been recognized for giving back to organizations including Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Public Health breastfeeding, Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, Salida High School Spartan football and many more, and also with job creation.”
Las Camelinas previously was on U.S. 50 before moving to its current downtown location.
Gaby Orejel said the community embraced them at both locations and continues to show support for their work, regardless of where they do business.
“We’d like to thank the Salida community for allowing us to be part of such a great community,” Gaby Orejel said. “We’ve been (in business) four years, and since the move to downtown it’s been even better.”
She said having the support of the town along with believing in their business is good, but having the camaraderie is just as great.
“We’ve been in this community as a family for about 18 years,” she said. “But more than the food, people know us on a personal level. It’s great to have that kind of friendship.”
Las Camelinas is open from 11 a.m. to around 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday for winter hours.
Gaby Orejel said they’ll stay open until 10 p.m. in summer.
