Chaffee County Landfill Closed on Wednesdays for Public Drop-offs, Beginning May 1st

Effective Wednesday, May 1st, 2024, Chaffee County Landfill will no longer be open to the general public on Wednesdays. This schedule change will allow adequate time for Landfill staff to address on-going equipment maintenance and repair needs, update its tracking systems and regulatory reporting compliance requirements, and manage wind-blown litter pickup. Commercial waste hauler customers will still be able to utilize the Landfill on Wednesdays upon making arrangements with the Landfill manager.

April 7, 2024 — To help landowners create defensible space around their homes, Chaffee Chips will coordinate free neighborhood slash removal and chipping services in several geographic areas this year.

The countywide fire mitigation program reduces the threat of wildfire by helping homeowners remove potential fire fuels. Property owners in the service areas are asked to cut and clear brush and trees before the event and pile them at their curbs.

Chaffee Rec Adopters Get Ready for a Summer of Taking Care of Public Lands

April 3, 2024 — The Chaffee Rec Adopters program addresses fast-paced growth of outdoor visitation through community volunteerism. Now in its third summer, program volunteers have given close to 2,000 hours of volunteer time through dispersed campsite clean ups, barbed wire fence removal, wetlands restoration, public land monitoring and dispersed campsite installation. 

A collaboration of individuals, organizations and land agencies, the Chaffee Rec Adopters announce its events calendar for 2024. Projects include dispersed campsite installation with the Bureau of Land Management, barbed wire fencing removal to improve wildlife habitat, dispersed campsite cleanup, continued restoration on Fourmile Creek and monitoring with the Chaffee Rec Collector App.

Cougar Divide Fuels Reduction Project set to begin mechanical thinning

LAKE GEORGE, Colo., March 15, 2024 – The South Park Ranger District on the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands will implement the Cougar Divide Fuels Reduction Project in support of the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service 10-year Wildfire Crisis Strategy. The specific area of this project is approximately 230 acres of National Forest lands along Forest Road 223 west of County Road 77, about seven miles north of Lake George in Park County, Colorado. The project is scheduled to begin the week of March 18 and is expected to last approximately two months.
